Help a Noob: Thrustmaster TCA Sidestick X Airbus

Hi everyone,

I had recently gone back to playing ED a few days ago so I consider myself a noob at this point. Here's my question:

I had a HOTAS One before and as I remember, it was pretty much plug and play since the game could detect it. This isn't the case with the TCA Sidestick X Airbus I had just bought. Can anyone guide me through the process please? The game only detects "Generic Joystick" and the throttle lever doesn't work. I tried playing around with the T.A.R.G.E.T. software but I don't quite understand how to set it up there either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

If there isn't a predefined set of binds for your stick then you just have to make a set for yourself. tbh, you'll probably want to change any predefined ones anyway, they just give you a starting point.

The process is you go through all the binds and set something that makes sense, take your time, you'll be using these for a while. This will probably take an hour or two; you have an advantage in that you've played the game before so you have an idea what each bind does. Then go do the tutorials and see how they work. Then you'll probably want to redo the binds for the things that don't work well, at this stage you'll probably be happy with 99% of your binds, But you'll probably eventually find some things that you'll want to change. Remember to make a copy of your binds and store them somewhere safe (not the binds folder) each time.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply.

I actually don't mind making my own binds and using the Sidestick alongside a keyboard for the rest of the controls but I just can't figure out how to make the throttle forward/backward work. There's a detent on the throttle slider on the joystick but my ship starts reversing before I even reach that detent when it's supposed to be going forward slowly. Any ideas how to have the ship in "neutral" position on the detent and reverse past the detent?

generate a card like this using ed ref card it looks very simular and maywork
https://edrefcard.info/device/T16000M
if it dont generate you can just print of and pen in so you have a visible record

then follow the backup guide sticky at the top of this pc subforum

if you still cant get the throttle working try raw driver only without the target software
Thanks, this should come in really handy. Yeah, I've tried uninstalling the TARGET software and using the joystick with just the drivers. The throttle somewhat works but just not as it should.

As I explained in my reply to metatheurgist above, there's a detent in my throttle slider but my ship starts reversing before the slider hits that detent. My ship should still be going forward slowly but instead starts reversing. I tried playing around with the dead zone settings in Elite Dangerous but haven't been successful thus far.

are you binding it to an axis analogue ie incremental input if incorrectly bound to a digital input ie on off type it wont work as intended
if that dont work maybe try a new driver that windows itself can suggest if you remove the current one or possibly even the T16000M driver

I'm sorry I did not understand a single thing about that question lol. I'm a noob to joysticks as well.

If you mean under ED>Settings>Controls>Ship Controls there's a dropdown list there that lets you select "Full Range" or "Forward Only", I set it to "Full Range". It should read the input as analogue in that case, right?

you may need to blank what you have already bound in relation to throttle
also your stick itself should be axsis bound i think not sure as i dont own one
and set throttle to continuious possibly in the throttle section you mentioned

The chances are that the detent isn't in the center of the throttle travel since it is designed to simulate some other function on the real Airbus, so by default it will not act like you are wanting it to.

Looking at the Thrustmaster Target software there doesn't seem to be any way to move the 'center' point of the throttle axis, all it will allow you to do is set a large enough dead zone in the center of movement so that the detent falls within that dead zone. But that will cause a very large dead zone for one direction and a much smaller zone for the other, which is probably not what you want either.

You could either remove the detent completely and just judge where the center is - see

or see if someone makes something similar to https://www.shapeways.com/product/ZRUW892G8/realistic-detents-for-thrustmaster-tca-quadrant

which would give you a center detent.

Ahhh I see, thank you for posting this. I think you are right, it maybe because it's supposed to emulate an airbus throttle. That makes a lot of sense. So it is working well then in that case. This clarifies things, thanks so much!

Now my only problem is taking an hour or two for key binds 😩

if you still cant get it right try a diffrent driver is what i suggest like the one windows will suggest as that may read the throttle as one single axsis instead of two
for eg good luck

Yes, I'll try to clear all my bindings too to get a fresh start and go from there. Thank you so much, mate! You've all been extremely helpful! Happy to be back on ED 😊

if you read this thread and subsequent guide you may shave another hour off (and maybe try the downloadable file from the above eg see the bottom of the edref page eg above)

happy bindings and toodeloo
