HELP! Cant run game from Steam and asking me to reinstall

Gents good morning

As the title says, i opened steam tried to run ED Horizons and instead of the game launcher I get the steam install window option which asks me to install about 20gb again

Last payed game yesterday and all was fine. Can someone advise?

Many thanks in advance

That's because steam wants to run it from the Steam Folder.

DRIVE\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Frontier

Whereas you probably have it installed in:

DRIVE\Program Files (x86)\Frontier

You could copy one to the other and hope it works but I don't really know as I haven't transferred mine to Steam. Otherwise just run it from the launcher and not via steam. All Steam really does in this case is put an extra launcher between you and the game... Although you do get the overlay I suppose.

Edit: Also not the best day to ask questions you want serious answers to.. (April 1st)

This if you have previously used non steam version and now redeemed the game in steam. If you have previously used the steam version, i dunno. Maybe check if the game has folder at your hard drive and where its located. Steam only detect games on Steam\SteamApps\common\ or separated steamlibrary folder if you have created one on other hard drive than steam is installed.

Thanks i have only the steam version from the start

The game is still in its steam folder like you hve noted and i launched directly from there

Question is steam is asking to reinstall something that is in its folder and should detect so if I do it, do i loose my ED save? Will it overwrite my current profile and i have to start from scratch?

Hmm, thats odd.

But no, your save game is safe and stored server side at Frontier.

I would generally recommend not running the game through Steam, it's not a great combination (what with Steam insisting on installing the whole game twice for starters). So unless you really need that bit of integration, just run a "direct" installation.

I am hoping it will get autofixed aomehow or else how am I suppose to update it ? Can it be done directly and not via stram althougj its a steam version?

no saves are 100% server side, you won't lose anything (well maybe custom keybinds, if those are in same folder). I have had this issue in steam with some other game and i found solution but i just can't remember what it was.

Found this from steam support: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8379-RYIP-2998

AFAICT you should be able to just download the launcher from elitedangerous.com and use the credentials of your Frontier account. For this game, Steam is mostly a key reseller and a not so great bootstrap installer.

i smell soon u will be that happy with steam that u would consider to send them travel to space without suits :p

That would be the easy way out for them...i was thinking medieval type torture :)

Is there a process for this? I would need to de-assosiate my keys with steam from my frontier account settings first i guess?

You shouldn't have to. As I said, Steam is just reselling the keys, you still have your Frontier account that you log in with, and that the game uses for everything (your commander save, support, store, etc.). All Steam does is run that launcher with some parameters to make it look integrated.

I'd just allow Steam to do whatever it needs to do. I've been using a Steam install and it's kept everything updated, even the beta.

If Steam thinks you need a reinstall, why not trust it? It seems very reliable to me.

I know what you mean its just that steam shouldnt be asking to reinstalled something that it is in its core game folder . And that makes me suspicious
