Help for a Newbie!

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick background - I'm a PC gamer (obvi) and I've never played a space sim before.

I pledged to Star Citizen awhile ago cause I thought it looked cool. Then I found out about E:D and now I'm curious as to what the difference is between the two and what I should expect if I buy into the beta now. I've watched some gameplay videos and it seems pretty complicated (i.e. what exactly is supercruise?). Is there a tutorial for new players?

I was hoping you all could help me out in comparing the two and if it would be worth it for me to get the beta. I'm dying to try out some space sim action.

I'm sorry if this has been asked a thousand times over but I'd appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

That's - a lot to answer :) Without making any value judgements, SC is building a game that will be very "handcrafted" with maybe, eventually, hundreds of systems featuring lots of unique areas to explore and interact with other players. They are aiming for a very high resolution game graphically that will push the limits of existing and future PC technology. The spaceships are a major selling point, and several extraordinarily detailed ships have been made available already. Community organizations (ie guilds) have received major support and are actively encouraged by the developers.

In comparison, ED is building a game that has less handcrafted content (although there will be a lot) but will instead use procedural generation techniques to model our entire galaxy. The emphasis is on scope, immensity and the freedom for players to travel and interact with the game as they wish. The game is being built to a high standard but does not have the intense focus on high-res spaceships that SC has adopted. The scope of play concerns the self-directed adventures of individual pilots rather than players acting as parts of organizations (not that this is compulsory in SC). Organizations are already forming around ED, but they do not have the sort of direct support that CIG is giving to their "guilds".

There will no doubt be a great deal that the two games have in common, but also great differences. Both will be amazing games and worth playing, IMHO, but for different reasons.
