Help for a Rift n00b please!

Gaah, this is torture! Bought home the new toys last night, got the Rift installed an working nicely.
ED then took n'years to download and I failed to get it running before I was literally falling asleep, so called it a night.

Read up on it today - aha! Must be this "allow unknown sources", setting OK great will try that when I finally get out of work.
And when yet another really welcomed Windows update has finally finished.

Nope, Elite blah is taking a while to load, etc. still. What else can I try? I've been looking forward to this so much and it's just teasing me! [downcast]

Login to the frontier store and check your purchases. Somewhere there should be an option to acquire steam keys.

Activate keys on Steam, download from steam server.

I bought my wife's copy from frontier and it literally WOULD NOT download. It was done in 2.5 min through steam.

If you don't use steam, or don't like steam. . . good luck o7

If you haven't even been able to start the game, and it's already downloaded, then maybe the Rift is causing the problem. I'd suggest disconnecting the Rift, try starting the game, go into options and set HMD Headphones, quit, and then reconnect the Rift and try again. Worth a shot to at least verify the game works. You may also want to verify files on the launcher screen.

The Windows 10 update screwed me with the USB ports. Btw, have you confirmed that your USB ports are compatible? Anyway, you might want to turn off power management for your USB ports in device manager (root hub).

If it's a Rift then you don't need Steam Keys.

I'm not sure why you are downloading Elite. If you are a "dangerous" forumite then did you not already have a copy of Elite?

To get the VR to work you select it from options>graphics>3D

Thanks, that looks like it's done the trick - had to download because new PC. Right, let's saddle up and mosey into the black!

Unless you didn't buy from the rift store... Unless you can transfer a frontier purchase TO the rift store. .?

All you need to do is what Garagiste did. Just tick "allow unknown sources" in Oculus Home.

When you start Elite, its Oculus driver calls up the Oculus Home application. The only problem is that the sound has to be set to play through the Oculus headset.

Downloading Elite again is something I'll have to face myself within the next several months. One of the downside to owning such a demanding peripheral <fixed grin>

Yup, this caught me out too. Spent a good half hour stuck on this on Saturday googling for "elitedangerous64.exe is taking a while to load". Eventually twigged the "HMD (Headphones)" setting.

To the OP (in case you run into other ED/Oculus issues, especially re: HOTAS bindings), I've written up some of the stuff I learned this weekend ...

I have a rift and don't have it in the Rift Store or used any code for it.

You can get an Oculus Home key from the Frontier Store if you purchased the game from there- the same goes for a Steam Key, although if you do register for the latter Frontier loose 30% of their future profits to Valve.

Also, as I understand it, if you redeem the Oculus Home Key in order to add Elite to your Oculus Library, then it will install a second copy of the entire Elite Dangerous game in the Oculus software folder leaving you with two copies of the game taking up valuable space on your PC. And, assuming you might sometimes want to run Elite outside of Oculus Home, you'll also have to keep both copies up to date.

Or just allow unknown sources, and select HMD (headphones, or speakers) in he 3d setting.
And maintain only one install.
