Newcomer / Intro Help For Returning Player

Hi all

I have just returned after 18 months due to illness and fired up the game but when I am now attacking a ship with beams and multis my ship seriously overheats when before it ran quite cool.

There must be something I that has changed but not sure what so any help will be appreciated.

I may be longer than year and a half (probably is, but who knows. I certainly don't) but there was a change to how energy capacitors (the three things you switch between - WEP, ENG and SYS) work. In particular - how the less energy you have in WEP capacitor, the more heat weapons dump into the hull. Exponentially more.

So that may be it - you're trying to fire your lasers with WEP capacitor nearly depleted?
 
Hi, I am flying a Corvette with the following.

8A Powerplant - Overcharged Thermal Spread
1 x Grade 3 and 2 x Grade 2 and 2 x Grade 1 Beam lasers with Thermal Shock and Thermal Conduit (all lvl 5)
2 x 4A MC with Corrosive Shell and Thermal Shock.

I’m assuming your beams are “overcharged“. Thats part of the problem.
but thermal shock and thermal conduits on your beams……they’re not helping you one bit. Power plant can’t rectify the difference created by the beams. (I love beams)
1. your power plant reduces heat by a total of 35%
2. Your 5 beams increase Heat by 75%
Your heat is still + 40% higher than what your power plant can reduce.
Theres two ways around this,
1. The cheap and annoying way is get used to using heat sinks. (I’m too busy fighting to dink around with one more concern)
or
2. The hard way by re-engineering your beams (thank me later)
first project is get just the 2 huge and 1 large beams re-engineered to “L5 efficient“ (you don’t need the other 2 beams. )
Thermal loads with L5 efficient drops 60% while power draw and distributor draws drop 45 and 48% which means you get to shoot those beams longer with 25% dmg increase.
My only love in the game is my Krait mk 2 . 3 large beams do extremely well in most circumstances, making Short work of most shields with impressive efficiency. Your MCs are just fine by the way. Once those shields are down, I let loose the dogs of war, both my med MCs and beams on the hull. a few ships even pop before things get to zero.

BUT with 2 huge and 1 large beams, you’ve got more than enough fire power to rip through shields with extreme efficiency.
Dropping the smaller 2 will also reduce heat (and power) concerns.
With just 2 MC’s you need to up your ability to rip through hulls Like butter. REMOVE 2 beams and turn em into MCs .

So lets add a bit of experimental effects
first off you had two experimental effects applied that cancelled each other out.
1. Thermal conduit (dmg increases)
2. Thermal shock (dmg decreases)
combined benefits= zero

So all 3 beams to ”efficient”
Im not exactly sure if your PP is offering you plenty of excess power, but I think with the engineering you did to it combined with 3 beam’s at L5 efficient you should have plenty now.
1. Experimental effect “OVERSIZED“
Only a 3% dmg increase but every bit adds up.
I would advise trying this on one huge beam
2. Experimental effect “THERMAL VENT“ on the 2nd huge beam (only works to reduce heat WHEN you hit your target)
3. Experimental effect “FLOW CONTROL “ on the large beam.
you should be able to rip through every shield now quite easily Without over heating your ship.

I know engineering things again is a huge pain, but the time and effort spent will be most gratifying in battle. Plus feeling Superior is a great confidence booster. I’ll help you tackle feeling all but invincible later.
Also consider moving into a Krait 2 in the future. (I’m heavily biased aint I?)

I’ll advise on the addition of 2 MC’s in a bit.

Whats your power distributor set up like?

I re-engineered the Beams and removed 2 of them and replaced with the multis and now everything is cool.....

My PP was already at lvl5 Overcharged with the low emissions.

Hiya! I'm chiming in on this thread because I've been on ED hiatus since end of April. So only about 8 months -- but now the Space nerve is beginning to itch again.
(Note that I play Horizons only, absolutely zero interest in a FPS)
So, question, what have I missed? Any new ships, modules, mechanics, other things that I should be looking out for? Have there been any further reworks of the game balance, payouts, missions, whatever?

I've been away since March, not noticed any change really.

The only real thing I have noticed are some new Guardian Xeno weapons and the new Universal Limpet Controller but it is a size 7 so can only be fitted to a few ships like the Corvette, Type-9, Cutter and Anaconda so basically the big money ships.
 
The other change or glitch that Odyssey messed up is Mining and hotspots. I love mining but Odyssey completely broke that. I have no idea how or why Odyssey broke it due to mining has nothing to do with Odyssey, but I don't know if just running Horizons helps that.
As an idiot I bought Odyssey and regret doing it but oh well, it's a glitch fest but it's new I suppose, Frontier is slowly fixing Odyssey but not really doing much with Horizons...:(

Ok thanks for the heads-up ^^ I have decided that now is the time to finally start that Epic Alt that has been on the backburner for ages. Since I pretty much rushed my Main in the meta playbook (reaching my first billion after mb 2 weeks of play), this time I'm gonna take it slow and try a more natural, gradual progression with actual time spent in ships like the Adder and the Cobra. ^^
