help... im returning now after a year + absence

I'm back after a year + absence and i'm flying around in Jonai... just pot shoting in a low res with my son. My son takes the stick he detargets the pirate, selects the Wolves security force and earns me a 300cr bounty. i have looked on the web and read a FAQ but i can't figure out how to clear my stupid bounty.

correct me if i'm wrong but didn't this used to be simple. i docked at the station (SR slipped in the slot without getting scanned) but i was completely locked out. i am very confused.

Galaxy Map; look for low sec, anarchy systems (with population), system map, check out station platforms, in the details tab will show if they have an Interstellar Faction, go there*, pay off any fines and bounty, then get back to the game.
If you accidentally killed an NPC (or helped in his death with a stray shot), in friendly fire you gain 1 notoriety which ticks down over a two hour period In Game.

* Make sure you're in the same ship that accrued the bounty or you can't pay it off and whatever you do, don't swap modules before paying the bounty as they become hot and cost an arm and a leg to clean.

EDIT: And welcome back CMDR. o7

Ugh, welcome back and search for threads on crime and punishment in the game now. It's fubared with constant hot fixes.

hope FDev fixes that mechanic.

The only thing that needs fixing is players learning to pay attention at what they're firing and what other ships are in their cone of fire, and players changing their "I must kill everything as fast as possible because otherwise my Cr/h sucks which means I lose at this game" mentality.

Sorry it that sounded harsh, I actually agree that friendly fire should be handled in a more permissive manner, and maybe would benefit from a "three strikes" mechanic, or any other mechanic where a single mistake in a long streak of law obedience should be treated less harshly. But that's an improvement, not a fix, and frankly I am tired of hearing players on this forum blaming the game mechanics for their mistakes, mistakes which have been documented and warned about for years now.

Yep, the new CrAP system is really annoying. Glad you got it sorted, now take off the guns and go gather mats or explore. Otherwise more flowbreaking madness will be inflicted upon you:)

Whilst it may be "realistic" its not intuitive at all and thats the problem. If a message came up saying that you can clear your fine by paying it off in contacts, it would stop a lot of these posts.

Its a game, its supposed to be fun, not have process hidden behind some obtuse interface.

And therein lies another problem. Elite Dangerous does not hold your hand. A good chunk of this game requires that you explore and work out yourself how things are meant to work. This is a game of discovery and a personal journey as much as it is about piloting spacecraft.

You think I spent as long as I have on this game because it's a game? No other game has as many hours poured into it because in Elite there's always something new to explore. Right now I'm exploring different loadouts breaking from my usual "light thermal/heavy kinetic" loadout to try something different in a ship I've never flown before. There's clear player influence changing my sector of space and I have to deal with the changing circumstances. A good majority of the game I played and figured things out long before I became a member on the forums.

I have a 'try it and see' mentality in where I try to puzzle out how to achieve something before I seek help.

And look at the rest of the community, puzzling out the mysteries and taking part in shaping a storyline. Charting what lies behind the bubble. Drawing political battlelines and engaging in asymmetric warfare.

The problem is that people are too used to neon signs being shoved in their face on what to do next and obediently following instructions just because someone asked them "would you kindly..."

Once you learn to unplug and free your mind. Elite becomes something different.
