Horizons Help - Just got an oculus but there is no information on how to run it with ED?

So I have my oculus - there's no instructions on how to get the game running so I just cant play it :(

I had a look online and it said to set one of the 3D modes to HMD which I have done, now the monitor is completely blank and there is nothing on the oculus except "its taking a while to load". Since the screen is now completely blank I have no way to change the game back to a playable state.

I'm suprised there is no option to select it in the graphics settings, not even a mention of the rift anywhere. I can hear the music on the rift but thats it.

I checked my graphics options in the nvidia control panel. All options to span displays are greyed out. Setup multiple displays does nothing. If I enable SLI the rift is not detected.

I got this to play ED on and it just doesnt work...sad panda today.

Have you restarted your PC since installing the Oculus software? I had the same problem as you the very first time I tried to play ED with my Rift. It was back in June but from memory it sorted itself out after one or two restarts.

Yeah I have. Made no difference.

Does the rift have to be the primary? I still am unable to run the game at all now I changed to VR mode. The app above crashes and I can't see any option anywhere to reset it to default. Not even anywhere on the launcher. So if you accidentally do this you are completely stuffed.

Really bummed out right now. Been waiting for this forever :(

I'm assuming you already had Elite installed on your desktop (i.e. directly from a Frontier download rather than in the Oculus Store).

One thing you need to do before running Elite is to Start the Oculus software, open up settings from the gear wheel on the desktop application window, go to the "General" section and tick "Unknown Sources".

Having done that, when you start Elite Oculus should start up too and you should be away with any luck.

It's ok - I sorted it. You need two HDMI inputs on the same card. Mine only has one which is why its just not detecting it.

One quick DVI to HDMI connector later and I'm in. Only had a brief chance to try it as the phone rang immediately and real life intervenes.

Its amazing but there are issues - my default forward view suddenly shifted left so I am looking out the side window by default - odd!

But from the few minutes I have had I am utterly mind blown!

Glad you got it sorted. Next time you get a chance suggest you make sure the 'RESET HMD' binding is set. Not sure if it's bound by default (might depend on the preset) but if it is it's probably F12. Although you can also reset the view with the Oculus remote.

Highly recommend the ED profiler tool for switching back and forth between 2D/3D as well as switching between different graphics settings and trying different UI colours. Re the tool giving a runtime error, post your issue in this thread, drkaii the author is usually very helpful: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...er-Robust-Settings-Profiler-Switcher-Detector!

After binding the reset HMD key the 2nd thing you should do is change the cockpit text colours to make it more readable. I use NO2O Turquoise-Deep Sky Blue preset from the above tool (though it does change the colours of targets on the scanner).

Another "glad you got it sorted" from here as well. Elite in VR is an incredible experience. I never played Elite before VR and now the few times I do just to see I can't get back to VR fast enough. I often say "without VR Elite is a beautiful and fantastic video game. With VR I'm flying an F'ING SPACESHIP!" It's that big a difference isn't it?

Recently I was helping another commander get better quality out of Elite via all the settings. If you're new to VR you might not be sure what to play with yet so here is my full list of settings. I have an i7 4770k 3.5Ghz, 32GB Ram, SSD, GTX 1080 - so not sure how you compare. I went through each setting, one by one, and figured out their impact on visual quality vs. impact on performance. These are what I use and it looks stunning - and I get a solid 90 fps almost everywhere (save for station interiors and some planet surfaces). In those cases the Oculus driver is compensating when below 90 (ASW or re-projection as it's called) and it still looks awesome.

Model Draw Distance = (1 tick to the left of middle)
Texture Quality = High
Shadow Quality = Medium
Bloom = Off
Blur = Off
Anti Aliasing = MLAXX2
Supersampling = 1.0
Ambient Occulsion = Medium
Environment Quality = High
FX Quality = High
Depth of Field = High
Reflections Quality = Low
Material Quality = High
Galaxy Map Quality = High
Terrain Quality = High
Terrain Work = Maximum
Terrain Material Quality = High
Jet Cone Quality = High
Field of View = Maximum
Gamma = (1 tick above middle)

Dashboard Brightness = Lowest (I find that if this is too high there is a lot of bloom around the in-cockpit text maxing it hard to read)
Disable GUI Effects = On (this turns off the little effect you see when the nav/sys panels left/right open, it's cool at first but having them pop instantly is much better)
Reduce Camera Shake = On (keeps the barf-mobile at bay)
Vehicle Motion Blackout = Off
Vehicle Maintain Horizon Camera = On (this is very important IMHO, it will keep you view level when driving the SRV so it moves around you rather than your head moving with it. Off it can make you VERY dizzy quickly and nothing makes me dizzy)

The important thing to know is this - "Supersampling" is done by Elite (by the Cobra engine) where "HMD Image Quality" is done by the VR API (so in this case by Oculus). We used to run the Oculus Debug Tool to set Supersampling there as it does a far better job than in game so Frontier just added that to the settings directly (so you don't need to run the Debug Tool). That setting has a huge impact on both framerate and image quality, so if you're on lesser hardware you may need to run that at 1.25 or even just 1.0 (with anti-aliasing at just off).

If you have further questions I or any of the other great guys here are more than happy to lend a hand. Elite in VR an amazing experience when setup and running properly.

So far I've found just improving the HMD quality is much better, and reducing the detail to VR High instead of Ultra. I can't see any difference between Ultra and High. I've also swapped out the DVI to HDMI adapter to a 4k/2k Display port to HDMI adapter for better all round performance.

I have switched all the UI panels off - having them off vastly improves immersion as they don't constantly pop up. Now I just use the shift and direction key(s) to bring them up.

Anti Aliasing also doesn't seem to do much.

Let me give you another thing that will greatly add to immersion - turning your entire HUD off. The keystroke is "Ctrl+Alt+G", it's not something you can setup in the key bindings in settings, it's a "hidden" feature. I use an app called JoyToKey that will send whatever keystrokes from whatever button I press on my joystick or throttle. I do this all the time, it's especially cool in witch space during an FSD jump. So I keep my panels on with my system and navigation panels opening when I look at them then I just turn off the HUD when I want to look around and not see them. Great in the SRV too.

Another tip - in graphical settings turn off the animations for the panels. That way they pop open instantly, the animation is cool but gets old pretty quick when you just want to see things quickly.

That works for you in VR? That key combination does nothing when I'm playing with my Oculus Rift, but works fine without VR..

Yup, it sure does, I use it about once every 4-5 minutes in game. Never had it not work on me. Does your Elite window have focus, I assume so if you're flying around but just checking. From what I just read you have to press LEFT ctrl and LEFT alt for this to work. Does that sound like it could be your issue?
