Help, low res planet surface issue: I have a "square" around me!

Dear Commanders,
I returned to the cockpit after a long long absence and I would like to revamp my relationship with the game with some serious exploration.
Yesterday I noted that, landing and flying low on planet surface (I was in the training mission), the terrain textures were very low resolution.
In particular, there is a bubble (or better said, a "square") around my ship where the texture are very low resolution, I can see the "blocks".
When looking far instead, texture are high res as they should be.
The low res "square" seems to move chasing my position around me, so wherever I go, I'm in the middle of low resolution.
Not really the best condition to enjoy surface exploration!
I use the Oculus Rift and I have all quality settings either on High or Ultra, with the bar completely on the right, and FPS is not affected at all, so what is the reason of this issue?

Thank you so much for your help and I apologize if this issue has been already discussed, I'll be grateful for your suggestions.

I don't have the exact same issue, but noticed on planets at locations with a relatively low sun there's now a black square (part of the shadow rendering I presume) below me, when flying at below ~2km altitude. Haven't noticed this before.

I experienced something similar a few updates ago and simply had to update my video drivers. Have you tried that?

Not yet but they are quite up to date... What I did is to update the game with all patches I missed when not playing for more than 1 year.

Well, give it a shot. I know that fixed my problems. I think part of it is when one updates video drivers, the game goes through its optimization again.

Dear CMDRs,
I tried yesterday and updated my Nvidia card drivers. No changes unfortunately, I still see very low resolution surface textures... Planets (below 1 or 2 km height) appear just like pool balls... A snow covered surface... Super smooth. Where have texture gone?

I use a Rift S and on a previous update I was seeing the lowest quality textures even though my Options menu was showing the highest setting. To cure the problem I had to select one of the presets (I chose preset Low), applied the setting, then reselected all my original High/Ultra settings.

I never saw an lack of textures though, just the Low ones.

Perhaps it might be worth deleting the NVidia shader cache? It's been a while since I've done it but I think it's still:

  • Disable Shader Cache globally in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Reboot
  • Delete the Shader Cache folders from C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache
  • Re-enable Shader Cache and reboot again

I will give it a go.
I opened a ticket. As soon as I can I'll add a few pictures to show what the issue looks like.
I was landing yesterday on an icy body and it was so evident. From 2km altitude I could see square brown patches over the blue icy surface. This really spoils the game and it is not acceptable.

Look at that! How can I play like this??

No way. Did it but the ugly squares are still there. omg :cry::cry:

I'm a rift s user and have no such square. I suggest return the graphics settings to default. What resolution are you in?
Then introduce each graphical increase ONE at a time... each time returning to see if it's gone. Good luck

It is also present in VR regardless of settings (CV1 and S user here, and it is there with both as well). It is relatively rare these days, but every now and then when I’m on approach to a surface installation I’ll see one on a different region of the planet/moon.

Another interesting note: I landed in one once out of necessity, and as I tried to exit it in my SRV, it seemed to spread. I’d reach the edge and cross it and things seemed to get better, but then the shading slowly crept up around me and spread. Kinda creepy, actually.

It is not related to oculus as playing 2D it’s still there.
so I understand this bug has been there for years, I’m happy it’s not new but then again, how can I solve it?
is there something i can do to remove it, or just sitting and waiting?
