PvP Help me dissect most recent "emergent content"

Full Disclosure:

I play overwhelmingly in Open since 3302. I have been interdicted and fought, as well as interdicted and flew. Nine times out of ten I am a brave Sir Robin, but occasionally I will stay and play. I am not salty and fair play (I think) to the CMDR who blew me up. I am simply looking for information as, in all of my experience, what happened to me last night was, well, unique.

I was taking my Cutter into Adenets for the current CG hauling Micro-Components. I had roughly 500 some odd tons on board. 8A Shields, 6 boosters, all G5 heavy duty and reinforced. No SCB's...as I say, I'm more Robin than I am Ronin. I was interdicted by a CMKIII. He had the full on pirate ship kit and immediately began blasting after I submitted. Also, he was shield-less...A shield-less CMKIII? I thought, well, I might as well play. The fight went on for a bit....maybe a minute? He had whittled my first ring of shields to dim and I had taken him down to 40-ish % hull. Occasionally I got thruster malfunctions, which I assume was some after effect of some engineering mod he had. I wasn't terribly concerned and kept thinking, man, this guy's got cohones taking on a Cutter is a CMKIII.

Then it happened.

There was an explosion and my shields completely failed. I had two rings and change of 5,000mj worth of shields....with four pips to Systems....and they just dropped. Gone.

After that, I immediately tried to High wake because I had no HRP's or any armour. I didn't make it and he made quick work of me at that point.

I was just in shock.

Is there a weapon out there that can just "turn off" shields?

Hahaha great story. Yeah you got hit with either mines or torpedoes with reverb cascade. My guess is mines.

I would guess mines, too, as I have two aft point defenses specifically for torps. But I was under the impression that reverb cascade only worked against SCB's...I guess I was wrong?

It may have been Flechette Launchers. They bypass shields and attack modules directly. The line above is what makes me think this. Did your drives just malfunction (you can still move and it feels like flight assist is off) or did you stop dead in your tracks (mine mods can do this)?

Furthermore, did you get any TORPEDO INCOMING alerts? Did you see pairs of white dots on your radar (mines)? If the answer to these questions is 'no' that points to Flechettes.

Finally, do you mount any Module Reinforcement Packages in your Cutter? Ships without these can be very vulnerable to Flechettes.

Cheers on the good attitude - there is much to learn here.

Dead in my tracks...like I had powered off the thrusters from the right hand panel.

I did see white dots and I did not get any torp alerts.

I had no RP's of any sort, ashamedly. I built this to be a "do-it-all" CG...one that could haul and troll a Hazrez. It's a definite PvE build.

Right on, CMDR. Nothing gets the blood pumping like an interdiction that isn't preambled by some twonky NPC telling me that they're after all my juicy cargo.

You got hit by Reverberating Cascade & Ion Disruptor mines.

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Ion_Disruptor

Edit: Just wanted to add that these are very deadly combo if you decide to boost at a target who is facing you without checking his subsystems, as the first ion disruption will make you unable to change course and you keep drifting into a chain of mines.

That sounds about right...thinking back on it, they were definitely mines.

But balance wise....should C2 hardpoint be able to nuke a size 8 internal like that? Seems a little....shall we say....unbalanced?

Yep, that sounds like the minelayer Cobra. I've always wondered how it was like taking one of those things on.

Well it was all fine and dandy until it went teats up!

Mines need a small (3 seconds?) arming time to cause effects and damage, so they can't be spammed from point blank ranges, and even then you could just reverse thrust and not get hit by them at all.

Torpedoes also have a very small ammo pool, and plenty of ways to avoid being hit by them.

These things are in the game to balance those 8k+ mj shields, which would be very boring to bring down with conventional weapons.

I had no HRP's or any armour.

Never fly a ship that doesn't have both an HRP and an MRP unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Such configurations are extremely vulnerable to flechettes.

Is there a weapon out there that can just "turn off" shields?

Flechettes will do AoE kinetic damage to modules through shields, and enough hits will take out softer components, sometimes including the shield generator itself.

There are also ion disruptor mines (which reboot drives) and reverberating cascade mines and torpedoes (which directly damage the shield generator).

Cheers, all for the responses. I was loosing Hull with full sheilds. So maybe it was a perfect storm of mines AND flechettes?

Welp, just got done with taking on a wing of 2 minelayer cobras. They're a pain in the neck to actually hit without turrets, but they're not much a threat at all because their mines are near useless against all my armor >:)

Agreed. I fought at least one of these guys at the CG last night in my "melee" FDL: 3kmj / 2600 hull + MRP / Huge PA / Packhounds / turrets with emissive and scramble. This is the perfect setup to eliminate the cobra minelayers and they know it.

Edit:
I wonder what Andy Polaris is up to these days?

A miner inconvenience.

Sorry - couldn't resist.
