Help me understand Reverb' Cascade Torps!

So I tried a Pirate #6 at the CG in open and soon got attacked by a couple of players, one in a Cutter. I was quite looking forward to the fight when BOP! Torpedo Alert and shields gone. Closely followed by FSD malfunction.

So I hi-waked out.

But it's not the first time over the years and every time I just leave. Fair enough gameplay if you just want the place to yourself but I can't understand what if anything these two items (especially the Reverb Cascade) brings to the game.

Is it just to boost sales of Point Defence?

Help me understand...

Well, that seems to be the answer. Reverb Cascade forces shield-tanks to break off and leave.

Sometimes, that is the attacker's objective: to drive the defender out of a system.
I probably would have stayed for a bit but for the FSD malfunction (missile presumably). My Vette is also a pretty tough hull tank too.

They do ~40 integrity damage a hit, have a two-second arming delay, and bleed speed from launch velocity down to 250m/s over those two seconds. It takes at least four to knock out most big ship shield generators and they are easy to avoid. They're primarily ambush weapons, with a large opportunity cost.

There are many counters, with moving out of the way being the most obvious, but ECM, seekers, railguns, screening shell frags, SLFs, and heatsinks also being viable in some circumstances. PDTs generally don't help because it takes far too much damage from them to down a torpedo during the few seconds they'll typically be closing during the first pass, and if they miss that first pass, they usually won't be a direct threat because they are too slow to catch back up.

Help you understand them?

Well, shields are grotesquely bloated. So FD gave us the opportunity to counter them with a weapon that nobody uses in the first place. Now, if you want a hard counter to massive shield bloat, all you have to do is pigeonhole your build with poorly designed weaponry. Or just don't bother, like most.

BTW, next time you get the torpedo warning, just boost. My T10 can outrun torpedoes.

Small caveat: don't boost towards into the torpedos like me 😁

It's an actual way for medium/small ships to get through the ridiculously boring and overpowered shields on most players ships.

It's more fun than most other items.

It's a deterrent to some player ships.

It's an excellent tool for assasination missions against high shield targets.

I understand that, like other more experienced CMDRs have opined, reverb cascade torpedoes are alpha strike/ambush weapons to nuke a single target’s shield; without much more use than a single strike, given the ammo limitations. I really want torpedoes to be useful beyond a single experimental effect and limited applications, because what space pilot doesn’t want to shout TORPEDOES AWAY at the screen every now and then?

Forgot to add, and ask, if this makes them useful as an assassination mission weapon? Swoop in, land a few torpedo volleys to take out the shields, hit the target and scoot out before their mates mob you?

I’ve got a Mamba hull that I’m struggling to find a purpose for; would sticking two large reverb torp pylons on it do the job for this task? The speed and stylings of the ship scream out ‘strike bomber’ to me.

First, I assume people mean wing assassinations, as regular Assassinations are easy. Wing Assassinations are the typical FDL wrapped in 30km of bubble wrap with another 30km in their back pocket, so Reverbs can definitely be a time saver.

I got just what you need. Take THIS Fleet Carriers! :ROFLMAO:

What to understand? Just another gimmick weapon system to troll people. It doesn't really affect overpowered shield meta in any way, as you have to commit too much for these weapon and they are painfully easy to avoid.
