Engineers help needed.

I had a quick go of the beta, about 2hrs. I thought I would prefer it when it was released fully. it was so easy to upgrade my ships specs. now every time I have tried to upgrade, it fails I have now been to 4 different engineers collected necessary goods to trade for upgrades. everything I have collected gone for nothing. and believe me a lot of time wasted collecting. can someone please explain how to, and were I'm going wrong. things don't seem to go as it did in the beta!
my ship is a python, 7A pp, 6A t, 5A fsd, 7A pd. mass =2121.5t
any help appreciated. I am currently at DECIAT and I am carrying some extra meta alloys if any of you Cmdr's need one and don't fancy the trip too collect them. 11 in total.
