Help Newb to Pay Fines and find friends online

Hey everyone nice to meet you!!! I am a new player in Elite Dangerous and I am loving it!! Flying around relaxing and just sightseeing is so great. I have begun to run simple data delivery missions, I have been selling collected star data, I found a mining laser, and purchased and learned how to fuel scoop so I'm fairly self sufficient on repairs and fuel. I have only two questions so far.
1. how can i find a group or some friends to play with? I'm new so dunno how useful i'd be but id love to start getting social since this is an MMO after all.
2. How can I pay my outstanding fines? I try to pay at places I dock but theres "no outstanding fines" listed. I thought maybe i need to fly back to the system where I got fined but in that case is there an easy way to find those systems on the galaxy map?
Thanks for your help everyone and let me tell you I am a huge fan of this game.

0. Should probably post on the newcomers forum (look at top) as it's less grumpy and more helpful.
1. There's a 'dangerous groups' subforum that has player groups
2. Pay off fines under 'contacts' - if they're another system then look for an interstellar factors - Google it to find where they are.

Finding friends is fairly easy.
Request to join a private group, such as Mobius or MobiusPvE, or whatever they're called (Google it!).
These groups are PvE only, so you don't have to worry about random CMDRs just murdering you, because you're there.
You can play in open, but it's a bit of a gamble on whether the CMDR you meet will be your friend, ignore you entirely, or murder you to death.
Mobius you only have to worry about CMDRs ignoring you.

Anyhoo, once you're in, fly on over to one of the many "hot spots" in game.
You've got Community Goals (CGs), starter systems (LHS... something..), Engineer bases, and PowerPlay capitals (don't go there in open).

Combat or mining CGs are your best bet to make friends.
Sign up for the CG, and head off to mine or shoot, or whatever.
Then try and chat to every CMDR you see, if in combat, try and wing up.

This is where I made most of my friends (of whom I never speak to anymore).

Then enjoy!

Fines can be paid off in contacts, on the station menu, of in the same jurisdiction.
If not, head to a medium Security system, and look for some kind of interstellar something something's to pay of all fines, with a +25% fee on top.

Regarding fines, most small orbital platforms have an "Interstellar contacts" tab in the "contacts" panel, which will allow you to hand in all your bounties and pay all your fines, from anywhere, for a 25% commission.

OTOH, I understand that all criminal records are being reset when the update goes live next week so maybe just wait 'til then and your fines will vanish on their own?

Your questions have been answered above, still let me give you this hints:

- eddb.io website and database will let you look up what to find where in the galaxy! It will save you a lot of frustration when looking for specific goods and equipment

- coriolis.io lets you build ships virtually so you can test your setup before heading off and buying it

- radio sidewinder (google it) is a very nice internet radio around the elite dangerous world

- try not to fall to the grind! Its easy! Just stop when something gets frustrating and do something else!

- be careful when playing in open esp. near community goals! there are some pervert players around who may want to stop you from having fun! Just switch to solo/private when you enter the CG system in case you want to avoid them!

You don't need to pay off any fines at the moment. Your slate will be wiped clean on the 27th Feb. In fact, even without that, there were no consequences or penalties if you didn't pay your fines, except for the large ones for carrying illicit cargo or passengers.
