Help Oculus CV1

So I’ve been playing ED with a CV1 Oculus for around 18months now. During that time and mostly through this forum, I’ve tried to keep up with “what’s what” in HMDs. However Have not seen such a complete package as Oculus CV1. I have this list of things that worry me about changing and don’t seem to be able to convince myself to invest in a new HMD because I’m over thinking it...

My list/concerns

- Rifts asynchronous space warp is better than anything else and is so important given the resources HMDs use that it’s a very important feature

- God rays. Not even 100% sure what they are. I like all the features I see regarding rays projecting from stars so if they are god rays I like them.

- SDE it just rarely gets in the way and even when it does I soon tune it out

- Resolution. I think it’s fine, I run at 1.5 HMD in Elite and all the text is readable and while it absolutely could be better it’s not bad and certainly 100% useable. I played the 1985 elite and managed ok.

- Oculus Home. I really like this environment. It’s great at doing updates for both the software for Oculus but also the games

- FOV totally ok for me, I like moving my head around as it adds to the emersion

- PC requirements. I’ve got a i7 9700 liquid cooled and overclcocked with a 1080ti EVGA GPU, fast Ram and an SSD. All this allows me to Run Elite well, not maxed, but well. So I worry that upping the demand on the PC will cripple the performance- see point 1

- Colour. I like the blacks and colours and hear stories of differences with LCD

- Sound. I love the sound emersion of the Oculus Rift and worry about loosing it

- Comfort. I can play for hours when allowed :)

I think that’s it, reading it back it looks like a rant but it’s not, it’s what worry’s me about moving away from the Rift CV1 and facing disappointment or loosing what I have and appreciate. I promise no defence of these points I would just like to hear peoples views on these items - and others - that they appreciate from the better “Gen 1.5 / 2.0” HMD headsets.

I have just updated my PC case to allow for a 2080ti GPU so I will have more horsepower soon.

cheers all - happy new year 🥳

Another happy CV1 owner here curious to see what owners of newer headsets have to say. On the subject of god rays and what they are, the following image isn't a bad illustration, it's that unintentional glare effect which you see coming off any bright object against a dark background such as the word oculus shown here.

Same here CV1 user, with even less power, so far nothing is convincing me to upgrade to something else. The reverb has me mildly interested, however my IPD doesn't match what that needs, so I am holding off for something with adjustable IPD.

Btw the reverb doesn't need 1.5 hmd, so in fact you will need less horse power to drive that one, but I get why you are concerned.

The only thing I'd change my CV1 for is comfort due to the fact that I have a narrow IPD and need it set to minimum which ends up with the lens holders digging into the bridge of my nose which definitely becomes quite uncomfortable after a bit, the resolution is perfectly bearable, as is the screen door effect and I'd be very concerned about black levels in elite with another headset.

Another CV1 owner here and I have also in recent months been thinking about upgrading to a HMD with a bit more clarity. However my IPD, which is 66, is at the higher end of what the Rift S can supposedly manage and from what I've read, for people in my range the sweet spot is not great. So I'm currently thinking about the Quest now that it has the link cable, as it still has a physical IPD adjustment.

The thing is, the CV1 currently still works fine and I have 3 sensors permanently setup on my walls, with the cables all running through trunking that I put up. So getting better visuals is really all I'm going to get from an upgrade. Oh and another thing that puts me off is the crap speakers on both the S and Quest compared to the headphones on the CV1, which I really like. There is the Valve Index of course, but I'd need to go the whole hog and get the base stations and knuckles as well and there's no way I'm blowing over £900 on a new HMD.

One of the things putting me off the Quest are the reports that it's very front heavy and uncomfortable for extended play, to the extent that people are even hanging counterweights off the back to try and correct it.

I have the very same Pc specs as you and I also had misgivings just like you about what next HMD matches all those positives that the CV1 offered in one bundle.
Truth is there is no alternative to the CV1 package and while the resolution and FOV is what we all want to improve when upgrading our HMD there is at present also only trade- off when moving on from the CV-1.
I myself went with the Index and I am very happy with it, but I do miss the black levels and less weight that the CV-1 offered but the Index bundle although expensive is the complete visual/audio set up and comfortable to wear.

If you only play Elite in VR then just get the Index Head set and one lighthouse for now and upgrade the rest later.
