HELP!!! Odyssey install

Aight. This thing is eating my HDD. I freed up enough space for Alpha and now OD is doubling the data during install before deleting the install files... WOT?
Can I uninstall Elite? Can I uninstall horizons? This is getting stupid. I only have a 250 gig drive and now FD's stuff is taking over 150gigs worth of space. This is not acceptable. Any help?

The "PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64" directory can be deleted - I suspect that the installation procedure for Odyssey may use some files from it if they are there but will download them if they are not.

So, basically I delete the alpha files and re-download?
That's what would happen.

With regard to base game and Horizons, they both "live" in the elite-dangerous-64 directory. If there are other directories in that folder then they may be from much older installations.

Well, Gained 50gb... It chomped through 20gb during first try, so hopefully it won't take too long. I just don't understand why the individual files are not deleted after writing to the new directory...

LOl. 3 hours. Sigh. Why Frontier? Why?
Probably because that folder could have any of the 4 phases/ numerous hotfixes in it and writing the code to reliably patch each of them to the final version would have been too complicated and would quite likely have resulted in errors. This way they are starting from a known codebase which is easier to support/update going forward.

The game syncs the files using the hashes of each file. If you leave the alpha files in the PUBLIC_TEST_64 directory, it copies files which aren't changed over to the new elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 directory and downloads only what it needs to.

You do still have to delete the alpha directory manually afterwards though.

Igetcha. I just don't get why it has to purge the files at the end instead of deleting after individual copy. Effectively doubling needed capacity.

Shockingly bad way of updating - I've ended up just having to uninstall other stuff just get the damn update process to go through plus it hogs bandwidth so badly I can't effectively do any other online activity with out lagging

It's because they don't use any packing for their files unlike every other game out there. I'm still downloading Odyssey, but the alpha had 81,000+ tiny files which is why it took up so much space. A 5 byte file will take up 2 kb or 4 kb (or even 8 or 16kb) depending on the size of your hard drive - so it takes up several magnitudes more space than it needs to.

Pathetic, really. 🤷‍♀️
