Hardware & Technical Help on building or buying a budget pc for elite

Hi all,
ok, here's where I'm at, the last time I played elite was in my bbc micro and I was hooked. Played it way too much when should have been doing homework or revision!
my home pc is now really long in the tooth, The only game I've played on it is flight simulator with a Microsoft sidewinder joystick that is now gathering dust in the loft. It has a 750 W PSU and I upgraded the case to and Antech solo a couple of years ago but other than that the rest of the system is about five years old or more.
I would like to build a new PC or buy one ready made that is suitable for elite other than that it will be used for surfing the net and a bit of photo editing.( startup speed is about ten mins in my current system-you get the gist😃)
I like the idea of building my own PC but if it is cheaper to buy one ready mate I will go that route. I've never built a pc before and must consider myself a bit of a technophobe nowadays,so please bear that in mind with the replies. Nothing too techy, but I'm sure I can put one together with the help of the net etc!

would like the whole lot to come under£400 is this possible?

thanks in advance for your replies

matt

Argos, Tescos both sell desk tops that can do the job, under £400.

Look at the requirements on the homepage and take it from there.

Arry.

That will struggle to run the game.

Quad core and a 2gb graphics card.

Sorry, I am not very good at this stuff.

Seriously, argos, seriously . . .

You have a psu and a case anything else? Do you need to buy a copy of windows? Do you have a monitor mouse and keyboard? If so what res if the monitor? Any extra hds? If so what type.

I can get you a build but seriously argos . . . no.

So instead of offering criticism try offering some facts, or better still, an answer to the question?

Only has an onboard R7 so would probably struggle.

You could buy a ready built PC and then upgrade the graphics card (but you would need to make sure the case was big enough to take the card).

Personally I will never buy a ready built PC as that's just me, I like getting my hands dirty. Plus you will always compromise on quality and/or component choice unless you go to a custom PC builder (Scan 3XS for example) but then you will be paying more.

I built a 'family PC' on a budget about 18 months ago and it cost around 400GBP but that did not include monitor or PSU. It only has integrated graphics. For a laugh I tried ED on it and as expected it struggled. Probably if I installed a graphics card it would be ok.

You don't say if you have a monitor. First thing you need to consider is what resolution you will be playing the game at and then what average/minimum frames per second you would like to get. This will determine the choice of graphics card. For the other components it's mainly about making sure you meant the min specs as Arry suggested. Ideally they would meet the recommended specs, but that will cost a LOT more than 400GBP.

TL;DR - if you only spend 400GBP I think you will be disappointed.

I did. I asked for more info so I could put a build together for him . . .

And yeah 400 would be a stretch if he didn't have monitor mouse and keys. 400 is pretty barebones tbh. I personally think it's better to pay extra now than suffer in the long run.

Don't buy an off-the-shelf PC from places like Argos or Tescos - and £400 is probably too little (depending on what you have already).
