Hardware & Technical Help Picking A New Monitor

Okay gang, as the title says, I need some advice. I'm very uneducated as to what attributes constitute a quality monitor, so please go gentle:)

This is my current monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824112020 I'm running a GeForce GTX 980 gpu, if that matters.

I was saving up for a Warthog & pedals, but now I'm starting to warm up to the idea of getting a Thrustmaster 16000M FCS instead, which will obviously save me a lot of cash. With that extra cash I'm considering upgrading to a 27 inch monitor. My budget is a maximum of $500.00.

I've been all over the internet looking for ideas, but honestly I'm just confused now. I'm hoping some of you will share your knowledge of a good setup with me. Any advice will be very appreciated!

PS--mods, I hope this is the appropriate place for a tech related post!

Anyway, my personal favourites are BenQ and LG when comes to monitors. Take anything with input lag under 4ms and you're good.

Personally if you are going to use hotas, the best experience imho would be from a bigger monitor, especially if you aren't sitting very close to it, sitting comfortably is important with hotas, sure 144hz and such is something a lot of people swear to, I've gamed on those and you can 'feel' a difference, sure, but you can feel the same difference on a 60hz monitor just not running with vsync, so find a good big monitor is what I would recommend for best experience, and don't list to all the 'pro' gamers and whatnot that claim various places online that 144hz 22" monitors are best, because frankly, unless you have a monster rig, you aren't going to have those extra hz anyway.

Help Picking A New Monitor


Simply get the best that you can afford. With monitor you tend to get what you pay for. Prices do not fluctuate much at all. The technology does only makes big leaps every few years. So a good monitor now will still be a good monitor in the future. From my point of viw the monitor is the most important part of any PC set-up. YOU can not upgrade it in bits and pcs like adding ram etc. So buy top end. People dont tend to get monitors every few months etc. What you get should ideally last you longer than your based PC. I tend to spend almost as much on my monitor as my base unit and only need to change it about once every five year or so. My current monitor set-up probably cost more than my base PC. I am running two 28" 4k screens. 1 in 4k and one in 2K. They will last me for years and have full guarantees and will be easy to sell on when I do upgrade them. Even with a card that cannot run a top end monitor at max you ae still better off because new graphic cards come out very often and last seasons can often be bought at as little as 50% of the original cost. I used to work in a world leading monitor company doing PR, testing, organizing reviews and working in the R& D labs. So this is not just waffle. I hope it is useful to you chaps :)

Only downside here is TN Panel Vs ips

My 34" Dell is a 60Hz ips and works beautifully, so TN if you want G-Sync and ips if you want a better looking? screen.

This one looks like a winner to me...but it retails for $100.00 more than I wanted to spend.

I've been giving it some thought and have come up with the necessary funds for the monitor you recommended , but I have a question about the hardware requirements: I have a GTX 980 with 4 gigs of memory and a i7-980 3.33 GHz & 6 cores. Will this be sufficient to max out Elite?

@ 1440p ?
If you mean by "maxing out" using monitor native resolution, Ultra GFX preset & get 60 FPS practically all the time, then the answer is yes.

Check my signature Commander if you fancy something big 40 inch 4k and just the best monitor I have ever had the pleasure of. (Needs display port connector for 60hz and max resolution)

P.S. Photo editing is one of my other main PC uses.

It's the 144Hz refresh rate I'm concerned about; do I have enough "horsepower" between my gpu & cpu to get the most out of that monitor?

@avow555, it looks great, but I don't have enough room (or money) for it!

Hehe, I have the big brother of that monitor, 43" unit.

BTW, HDMI 2.0 has enough bandwith for 60Hz 4k.
I use the DisplayPort myself too though, too many issues previously with HDMI & colour depth.

Honestly, I don't think your CPU & GPU combo can keep E: D at 144Hz in 1440p & Ultra.
In space, no problem, but stations, planets & rings/belt clusters are more demanding.
That said, it is a GSYNC unit, so lower framerates shouldn't pose a problem.

I think you'll be all right, especially on the cpu.

I'm running a Core i7-950 @ 3.0 GHz, 24GB ram, Asus Strix 980Ti 6GB card, and I'm driving a 34" curved Dell PLUS another 24" 1920X1200 monitor at the same time with absolutely no problems even when watching tv and/or videos on the "small" monitor.

I'd think if you run a single 1440p you should be fine for ED and might also be able to drive another less demanding monitor alongside. If the 2nd monitor brings performance down in ED, you can always disable it when gaming and still have it available for normal non-gaming use.

Given your specs, I think a 27" 1440p is a pretty good fit.

As always, no guarantees express or implied apply, the recommendations of the author are technically worth no more than what was paid for them...

But yeah, I think it's a good gamble. Nice part is that down the road if you get more graphics power, a 34" primary would make using the 27" the ideal secondary monitor as the vertical alignment would match.

I intend to replace my 24" with a 27" 1440p for that very reason as soon as I get one of my kids to graduate from college.

I think you've got me talked into it! I assume that even if I can't keep a game like ED maxed out as Zieman said around stations, the framerate drop-off shouldn't be too severe.

I gave a lot of thought and research time last year when I opted to go the 1440p route due to concerns I wouldn't be able to get decent frame rates with 4k.

What frame rates are you guys getting at 60Hz 4k? I dont think I want to go the VR route moving fwd, but 4k bigger screen is where I eventually want to go the next time I do a major upgrade, probably sometime next year.

I get 60 FPS practically all the time (in game vsync & frame limit off, Nvidia Vsync adaptive, triple buffering on).
Only dips* to 50+ happen when mining a busy icy ring or viewing big misty craters from the ground, and very rarely at busy stations.
And the worst FPS is 40+ when using SRV headlights while large area is visible.

i7 4770k stock
Asus Strix 980ti stock (factory OC)
3840x2160 res

Modded Ultra settings:
- bloom & ambient occlusion off
- FXAA
- terrain quality (all 3 of them) high
- terrain work max CPU

* I don't count the momentary drops of FSP what you get at hyperjump starts or when opening station services menu, galaxy map or system map here, as I think they're more networking/game architecture than GFX related.

Hello all, talking of monitors ,is anyone running the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q Ultrawide monitor for Elite dangerous Horizons .thinking of getting one for xmas ,big price tag i know and also considering the Acer predator X34a,same panel i believe,any thoughts or feedback would be welcome regards T

I have the Dell S2716DG Gsync monitor. Looks great after I used a custom config for the monitor. Read this article on the monitor and they will link to their congif files for monitors. They tell you how to install it, and I liked the way it looks. Saved me the time of manually trying options.

There is one issue with this monitor, turn the monitor on first then the PC quickly. If you wait to long the monitor goes to sleep mode and won't wake up. So you end up shutting down the PC and monitor. Minor annoyance but once use to that quirk it is a great picture and Gsync really does help a lot.
