Yes, that's what happens.
All of a sudden you wonder what the problem was. But by then you have other things to worry about.

The keyword is practice. If you have a DC, once you are familiar with your controls. Switch the DC off and practice doing it manually so you don't become reliant on it. In combat you can lose your cockpit (which means your HUD goes too) and your DC. That is exciting when your air is running out. [yesnod]

I have been in this boat for a few hours, then last night it all came together using the l3 clicking to great effect bringing the old sidewinder like a pro.

Felt good now just to work out where the entrance is sometimes

When you fsd in, curve in from the planet before you drop out it will be in front you.

Once you've requested docking, the compass (circle above left of radar) will point to the entrance.
It will change to your docking bay when you pass through the letter box.

As you can see above all landing pads have a huge ramp /blast shield at one end, with an arrow pointing up. This needs to be behind you in order to dock.

What works for me, is to land as if you were 'skating' down this ramp, then pull up. Dont forget to engage your side thrusters with L3 so you can align yourself.

That big red arrow should be included in game. Who designs a station with obstacles right in front of landing bays. The alignment is always back to front on approach.
