HELP PLEASE!!

Guys and Gals,

i have a chance to buy a nearly new Rift (2 Weeks old) but am i wrong in being a little worried over all the issues with the rift (And Vive). It's £475, a huge saving, but still a huge wack!

Should I ? or wait till issue are sorted? ED issue and Hardware issues.

Basically i think i am asking Rift owners and users, given the chance again would they buy into the rift or not part with the dosh, is the immersion in the game so brilliant that i would be silly to refuse this offer?

Thanks Cmdrs

I would not play ED if I did not have the vive. I think vr gives new life to the game. If you have the pc hardware already and is sure that the unit you buy is without defects then it feels like a good deal.

I'm personally unconvinced about long-term playing with a VR headset (I like to use my laptop and have a cup of tea while playing) BUT having recently tried a VR headset (at LaveCon) it is -AMAZING-.

Definitely if your gameplay is in shorter bursts and more action orientated it will add hugely to the game. The feeling of immersion is incredible. I actually got a slight touch of vertigo just sitting in the cockpit of a T7 (I think it was) and looking down at the hangar floor.

As others have said; if you don't like it, you can always sell it on; you'll be unlikely to lose much in the short term. You do need a fairly beefy PC and GPU to run it though, but I'm sure you're aware of that.

I play ED with rift (or vive) just like I would before.
I honestly get tired of my office chair before wanting to take the rift off.

Playing outside of VR is no longer an option to me but I don't get motion sickness
EVER from vr.

Wether it is worth it? Well that's all really relative.
But compared to the vive the rift doesn't really have any issues.

Buying used like mentioned above you could very likely break even if you don't like it .

I mostly only play ED inside my Rift.

I've had no hardware problems. I've seen a couple people on here with what sound like HDMI connectivity issues, but I think that is relatively rare.

Software wise: while there's certainly room for FD to improve the experience in VR (improve the graphics pipeline): it's still way superior an overall experience than a monitor.

If you can demo it first, then try it.
That aside my recommendation would be to buy it. ED in the rift is amazing, I can't imagine going back to the monitor to play it.
I have a hard drive full of VR games I've downloaded and never got around to playing because ED always seems to load up first.;)
I have had no hardware problems at all with the Rift, and the recent firmware update certainly sharpened things up visually.

Thank and a HUGE thank you to all contributors. I play ED like all the time, and my setup is pretty good with a Phillips 40" Monitor (Not TV but a proper PC 4k Monitor!

I get the VR scene as i own a Samsung Gear, yes i know the quality is poor, but i am not comparing it, just stating i get the whole Immersion VR thing.

HOWEVER, and this is what is putting me off, I use a second PC with a small screen and have that open for my Spreadsheets on Engineers, Trading, BBC, Email, Forum...... i really don't know if i could cope without the use of that 2nd screen, i use it to look up things, where to go, where to find that engineer requirements, my browsing, well you know everything else bar the actual game.

I think i am gonna wait, but again MANY Thanks for all your help/guidance

Everyone above bar one said 'buy it' so you must immediately listen and do so... ill add my voice to theirs, CV1 is worth every penny.

Bill, i get that, but like i said, i don't think i can do without my 2nd screen/PC and what i use that for! I fully understand it would give me a better immersion/Experience, i understand it would be better game play etc etc, but......................... my 2nd screen is 100% so useful to me!

My experience with the Rift and various games, including Elite, Project Cars, Subnautica and so on is beyond awesome. I never encountered any problems and the feeling of ingame presence an HMD delivers is breathtaking. I will never play Elite without VR anymore.

Before getting into VR, know that the resolution of current HMDs is good, but is one of the downsides, when you are used to 2 or 4k gaming. The second thing to know is, that VR is demanding. I use a GTX 970 but will upgrade to a new GeForce by the end of the year. The 970 delivers good visual performance in VR while keeping a good fps rate, however it is far from giving you the best experience.

VR is a major game changer. Gaming is so much more fun, it cannot really be discribed... If you have the money and are ready to go the way (you will want more, be assured, so it will continue to cost) then do it. For me its every penny well spent.

Be wary also that Oculus warranty falls away when sold by original buyer. So no warranty, even if it is only 2 weeks old. Apparently this is business as usual in the states. Warranty follows the product in Europe (Denmark).

Always read the fine print: https://www3.oculus.com/en-us/legal/limited-warranty/

"...This warranty cannot be assigned or transferred to any subsequent purchaser or user and is
not available to products that were purchased used or from any source other than Oculus
or an authorized retailer..."

There is no reason that you can't lift up the Rift to look at a monitor or 2nd monitor. Rift users find themselves doing it all the time. If you wear glasses ,however, it is a pain. Otherwise, no biggie. I echo the sentiment, don't want to play ED on a flat screen anymore. Sounds like your attached to your 4k. A couple of 4kers here weren't happy. Quite a few others were. The only way you will be sure is to try a Rift CV1 in ED before you buy.

I have a Vive and would not play the game without it now, it breathes a whole new life into the game. Brings everything up to life size scale and its huge.

This is the same issue I had, but I normally watch youtube or netflix. I think waiting is the best option. Its not like VR is going to get worse or cost more later.

While lifting it up to view another screen is easy, it can be a hassle to do it every few mins depending on what your looking at. Also having to "re-seat" back can be annoying (for me).
I feel the same way, I don't want to go back to a screen for ED, but unless i'm in combat or SRV, there isn't much to see.

It would be a nice feature if FD would add a "laptop screen" in the ships so you could browse the internet while immersed in VR. Anything from Netflix to INARA.cz would be fantastic. I suppose those of us who can use the keyboard without having to look at it would be at an advantage, but that would complete the package for me.
Imagine editing screenshots from inside your ship :D

There is a windows injector but you honestly don't have the resolution to use it.
Unless the window is ginormous to the point where you hardly see any of the game anymore.

Or you have three words per screen/page. I guess it could work somewhat for video but that didn't work at all for me, it was either black screen or 3 fps.

Valid point. I was thinking more of the spreadsheet remark and peeking at Engineer data than watching tv while playing in VR.
Given that this multi-tasking criteria was added only after all those who appear to actually own a HMD had given a thumbs up, I suspect Wasp0 is not ready to pull the trigger at this time. The point Globusdiablo makes is also valid "be wary"
As far as the original SCREAM for help, to answer the question, I think most of us would buy into VR again.
