Newcomer / Intro Help remembering a particular targeting bind.

I’m normally very good with my binds, but I’ve got myself in a muddle at the moment. Everything is bound as I want it except one particular bind which I can’t remember for the life of me.

Normally I can target the station I’m flying to and during the cruise scan ships along the way. After each scan I used to press a button on my HOTAS and it would lock back to the station I’d originally targeted. Somehow I’ve messed this up and the closest I’ve found is ‘Target Ahead’ which just targets whatever is ahead, ships, planets and so on.

Does anyone know which bind I need to get back to the way I had it before? I’ve assumed it’s in the targeting section but may be misremembering or simply overlooking something very obvious. It’s not target next system en route as I use that a lot and the binding for that hasn’t changed.

Thanks

Previous Hostile - (sounds daft doesn't it - but that is the control I use for this and it works perfectly)

That’s brilliant, thank you Para.

It‘s a small but very handy key binding to have and goes to show why I’d never be given a job at Frontier, totally without logic to pop it on Previous Hostile....I either don’t share their sense of humour or would be seen as far too predictable in my suggestions.

Thank you.

I have spent more time playing the keybind "game loop" (I promised myself I would NEVER use that term) than I do playing any other part of the game. :)

Previous (or Next) Hostile works, unless there are any actual hostiles in the area (e.g. if you've been a thorn in the sides of the controlling faction in a war). Target ahead (while pointing at empty space) works as well, and IIRC "target next destingation" would work to - not sure on the exact name, it definitely works with plotted routes.

Next hostile doesn't work - you get the message "No Hostiles In Range"

"Target Next System in Route" does not work, it only works for destination not in current system.

If you select "Target Ahead" with nothing in front then you do not re-acquire your previously targeted destination.

Only "Target Previous Hostile" actually resets your target to the previous targeted destination.

I know it sounds stupid and of course this only works in supercruise but "Cycle Previous Hostile Ship" cancels anything you have selected and resets the nav target to that nav target you had set before you chose to target ships for data etc.

Target ahead used to target ships ahead of you without disengaging your fsd destination lock, it still does in horizons, but they broke that functionality in the alpha.

Link in my sig to the bug report, one more needed for confirmation, please put it over the top. This is the kind of thing FD can let go for months.

Checked it yesterday, but all these options worked for me ... targeted station, and cycled through ships in SC to get scan them. I could untarget them by whatever means and it would put the station back as my target.

Are you on PC? 'cos I didn't fake the video (as you can tell from my bumbling ;) ).

Yes. I didn't mean to imply you faked it, only that it works (and always has worked) for me. Have only watched without sound (at work), so can't really comment on the video

No I was just saying that I hadn't manipulated the video at all. So you, on PC in Horizons, can select target ahead and it returns to your Nav Destination? Also "next system in route"? The Next Hostile one might actually not be what I was testing, now that I think about it I am using Highest Threat binding in the video, I'll have to check Next Hostile later as that is only on a keybind not a button.

Yes to all your questions. But I was looking at an empty spot when using "target ahead". In VR (and headtracking / headlook) Elite uses your view as "ahead", so you can target something you are looking at - or nothing in my case.

I don't have highest threat bound (to many mines/missiles messing it up), I am faster tabbing through enemies or just look at it and target it that way.

I forgot to confirm - yes next hostile also works, sorry. Target ahead does not return me to the destination nav target though, don't know why this is different for me, it isn't TrackIR as I use that too.

That works in horizons, just not in odyessey. Link to the bug report in my sig if you want to upvote it.

I just tested this in the Alpha and it still works perfectly. Both previous and next hostile returns your target focus to the navigation target you had set already. I don't know if this morning's update fixed this as I had not previously tested this functionality in the Alpha.
