Help setting up controls

Hi there

I played the beta for the first time and the game looks amazing, the sounds are spot on; the graphics are beautiful but I'm having all sorts of problems setting up my controls! I have a Speedlink Black Widow flight stick; I'm trying to get it set up so it flies like the old X-Wing games did - if I can do that, then I reckon it's going to be all sorts of fun playing this beta but right now everything feels very twitchy, almost as though it's not analogue controls. Can anyone help - some screens of your controller setup would be perfect.

Thanks in advance guys.

If you're a Premium Beta, then you have an early Alpha build that has controller bugs (since fixed, I believe).
Someone else may have some advice that helps you, though.

I spent a good hour messing about with custom controls for my ancient joystick. Thinking back to X-Wing, that mostly used yaw with roll usually being activated by holding a button and then moving the joystick sideways. ED limits yaw adjustments in favour of roll so you won't get quite the same feel.

With the response, is it worth checking the calibration in Windows? Stick movement for me is pretty progressive, though I did add a notch or two of dead-zone so the ship wasn't wandering about as I flew.

As an aside, I have mapped the horizontal and vertical thrusters to the view control on the stick. I don't know if that was a good idea or not yet.

I also don't like the throttle control. The ship reverse thrusts at its minimum setting, with nil thrust somewhere in the middle. It also doesn't currently recognise the last notch that you would expect to be boost - unless one might often engage boost at a mid-throttle setting. I will either have to get used to it or carry out a few more tweaks yet.

Does anyone know if custom settings will be lost due to tweaks in the control system between the Beta test version and the eventual first Beta - it sounds like a few amendments were made in later Alphas?

There are two throttle range settings. One is - full range, I think that is the one you are using. In this case you have 0 in the middle of the axis. The other one is forward only, in this case 0 is at throttle idle position. A downside is that you need to assign a button to reverse thrust, advantage you have more precise thrust controls. If you are having trouble with full range thrust I would suggest trying forward only mode to see if it suits you better.

Make sure you're binding your analogue controls to the "AXIS" bindings and not the pairs of digital bindings used if you want two keys to handle the job for example. E.g bind the Pitch Axes to your stick, not the pitch up and down bindings as they are digital, not analgue.

The main maneuvering axes are pitch and roll, yaw is very slow. You need to assign pitch axis, roll axis and yaw axis in control settings. When I have assigned axes the first time I made an error and assign pitch up/down roll right/left etc. instead of axes. This made controlling the ship very difficult.

I thought there might be something like that but hadn't seen it so far. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for your help; I was going to wait for the proper beta anyway, so that's what I'll do. :)
