Help station through trade?

From what I understand from a few BGS threads, it is possible to help the leading faction of a system by buying goods from them.
But is the opposite also true? If I supply them with goods that are high in demand over there (apart from meds or food when in outbreak or famine state), will this help out as well?

To my current understanding, yes. And the number of transactions is more important than the absolute amount, i.e. selling 10*1 ton will shift more influence than selling 1*10 tons.
