Help! Steam only?

After hours of looking ive seen nothing but people that have problems with steam and this game but no definite answer from my ticket to frontier,

If I buy the version off frontier will it work without steam?

I hate Steam, I wont use it for anything other than CS and DOD that I was forced to adopt it on when WON went down. I have a joystick here setup very nicely with vjoy and ujr and ive played nearly every space sim since privateer, looking forward to blowing things up.. Thanks for any help, I want the game but will have nothing to do with steam.

Why not simply buy it from the Frontier Store? That version will definitely work without Steam.

The ED Steam version will also work without Steam if you start it from the ED launcher. Steam is only useful for updates.

lol Yes! Thats what I am asking, is that version steam free for sure? I cant find a simple yes or no, nothing is clear

I've been wanting to buy this game for days because the download will take a day or two for me, and I think ill be dead before a real version of star citizen is out.. yesterday tried F.T.L.(horrible no skill phone game if ya ask me) and Rebel Galaxy(shallow 2d let down) trying to find something fun.. playing Space Engineers now, but only on the 2nd level of the main quest... bit strange so far...

Well, I bought mine on Steam, but start it via a link to the ED launcher and Steam doesn't come up. You only need a Frontier account to play it.

Still never found a real yes or no, watched a video and decided it was worth it... let ya know when its done downloading!

You can always redeem a Steam key from the FD Store for free in case of need. Or one for Oculus Store, and that's the one I use 99%.

I was looking for something official, no offense but I would only believe the forums if say 20 people spammed it with an answer fairly fast or a moderator or two chimed in. I have played online games before I know not to trust everyone lol most of steam is blocked just enough is allowed to run when I fire up DoD:source for me to play... that steamwebhelper will never run on my PC again :)

Horizons is the one I wanted to install first right?

Well after wasting 8 hours just to end up giving up and deleting the whole folder, the launcher froze again leaving me very angry so while I attempted to fix it I added it to steam just to use their download servers should it not work, so I can safely say for sure;

No Steam needed!

But you may want to keep your steam handy since the launcher clearly doesn't work right it just froze after my DSL(yeah 7mbit so steams only selling point means nothing to me) disconnected and I was only able to get it reset by resetting the temp files twice in a row, yeah no clue why... wasted about 10 hours. but got it to resume, so dont delete your folder with a partial download like I did... you can save it.

See ya in space!

Well I had high hopes but nothing compared to the cash you get exploring then I got the boot from the starter systems so flew around trying to figure this engineer thing out and turns out everything is just a grind for components... between the lack of just ships and equipment and things to do(that are not boring as hell) its been hard enough even to start the game and I have tons of free time right now.. ive only ran into players like twice once starting then later on in a engineer system both times pointless, this game feels like a 30 hour sim they tried to turn into a 3 year game. very very disappointed, made it to about 4 mill now im ready to quit and maybe see if it still sucks in a year or so. and what the hell is this o7 greeting? I dont get it, im going outside to weed that is seriously more fun than this game.

im going outside to weed that is seriously more fun than this game.

You've got it backwards. Weed, then the game. More fun that way :D

Just joking. If you hate it now, you'll still hate it in a year. Nothing wrong with deciding it's not the game for you.

I wanted it to be good, I just did that single player combat demo and wiped that fairly easy... I just don't understand what there is to do, spend a month grinding for annoying little upgrades or tech unlocks? Why even bother making more money for a ship thats even more annoying to fly? I hate to just and not contribute, but damn maybe not make everyone crash into the sun everytime they jump would be a start or can I avoid that? I just jumped into the open play, no practice.. clearly a mistake... I dunno ill try again, I want it to be good but when you've played everything from all the wing commanders to years of discovery freelacer online, I just dont get this game...

Sad to hear that, but Elite is more complex than most other space games and possibly not for everyone. It's the best space game out there so far, but it takes some time to get a grip. Don't give up too early, though. As I see it, you barely scratched the surface yet. At 4M credits, you are ready to buy a better ship (Cobra Mk. III for example) and start A-rating it. Forget about the engineers for a while. Leave half of your cash for rebuys, you might die often once your combat rank is beyond Harmless (be glad the CMDRs in that engineer system didn't kill you). Elite has many different career options and ways to earn money and fame. If you want some action, I would visit a High Res POI and start hunting pirates there. Or trade, mine, pirate and at a later stage, PvP or Xexo hunt. Take some missions. If you're really into space games, this is it, and 30 hours won't even be enough to just fly to the end of the galaxy. My records claim I assembled around 3000+ flight hours during the last 3 years, and I don't play boring games. Some parts may seem grindy, but that's entirely up to you; YMMV. It's a giant sandbox after all with complex mechanics. And a good tutorial might be helpful to see what you can do. Here are two good ones:

Fly safe (and never without a rebuy), O7,
🙃

NB: O7 is the common greeting in Elite. Think of a military salute.
