Hardware & Technical Help to buy PC capable of playing E:D for my husband as surprise xmas present

Hi everyone,

I really would appreciate if someone could just let me know if the following specs would be suitable for playing E:D. My husband has no clue I have been searching around to buy him a computer as a surprise!

After watching endless videos and specs, I really would appreciate if anyone with game experience could tell me if it would run! :S

  • AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quadcore Processor
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 2GB Graphics Card
  • 4GB RAM
  • 1TB Hard Drive
  • 500W Power Supply

If this is posted in error - I apologize but appreciate your help :D

Hi,

I would recommend getting more RAM, although 4Gb is enough according to the specs, I personally would go with 8Gb minimum.

What operating system does it come with ?, is it 32 or 64 bit version of Windows?, 32bit will only use just over 3Gb of Ram, so I would recommend the 64bit version.

Is that a GTX 750 or a 750ti ?

I have a GTX 760 and the game plays nicely, so I imagine that Graphcs card would be fine.

Hi,

Thank you so much for responding! We have Windows 7 64 bit and the graphics card is not the GTI one. My other choice would be with 8GB Ram and the Radeon R9 270X 2GB graphic card. I am thinking that maybe I should go for that….because the game isn't released I am obviously concerned that if I go in bottom end there is no room for upgrades.

Is there a massive difference between the GTX 750 and 760? Confusing stuff!

Actually , the reason I was asking about the card was to make sure the PSU you had in the machine was capable of running it, but from what I have read, 500W should be fine.

The 8Gb machine with the Radeon would be fine.

It certainly wont be a bottom end machine, but it wont be top end either, but it should play the game fine.

I would second INaeem's recommendation for Scan.co.uk, give them a call , they are very helpful.

Mojo a lot depends on where exactly you are buying the PC from, and what kind of price you're willing to pay.

Generally speaking, Intel CPUs are better but more expensive than AMD ones.

AMD graphics cards are almost always better value than Nvidia cards (the 270X is much faster than the 750) but currently they need more powerful power supplies to run (which normally adds cost). If you are buying a pre-built from a shop or online, that should be taken care of but don't be afraid to ask for an exact parts list (including manufacturer of PSU) and come back with it.

I can't add anything here, but you know your husband is going to love you for this! My wife got me my new graphics card and joystick for my birthday so i could play ED. I've never loved her more!

To everyone above!

Thank you so much for all your help! I have managed to find the right computer for my husband and am sure will be a great xmas present! Elite dangerous is pre-ordered - although I feel that this christmas present will be opened on the 16th! :D

I can't offer any further advice but I just want to say that you are a wife that all wives should look up to, if mine had her way i would never play any games.

Hi. What a wife! Have some rep for starters for spoiling your hubby with a new PC :)

As for the specs: like it's been suggested before - go for 8 GB RAM rather than 4 GB. I would also suggest going for an SSD drive rather than Hard Disk Drive. The difference in system and gaming peformance is humongous. They are more expensive then HDD's so I'd go for 256 GB to be split between system and gaming and then in the future purchase a larger HDD as a general storage drive.

Here's some good comparisons:

::EDIT::

As for the shops, I would highly recommend CCL - they are a small and reliable independent shop located in Bradford and have the cheapest prices I've ever seen. Someone mentioned Scan - I can also recommend them. Slightly more expensive than CCL and equally reliable.

Good luck with your shopping!
