Newcomer / Intro Help Understanding Hunt Pirate missions

:eek:I took a mission to take 6 pirates out in a system. But I have only taken 2. one was by nav beacon and another in excavation site. I thought the excavation site to be best, but when I went after a third all ships turned red and went after me including the bounty thieving security ships. Then I went by a USS (unidentified signal source) and downed a cobra mrk3 with wanted status and didn't get credit for a pirate kill. So I'm a little confused right now.

Authorities will get very upset if even one round hits them. Then they'll turn on you like a pack of wolves.
This may have happened to you. Or... You fired on a ship that wasn't tagged "WANTED". Or the wanted ship belonged to the same faction as the folks who turned red on you... But note. Even if ships turn red, this doesn't necessarily mean that they'll fire on you.

How did you ID them as pirates. Just because a ship is wanted, it may not have been the 'pirate' the faction was after, check their affiliation. Some do take a bit of finding.

It's hard to determine sometimes, but "Kill Pirate" missions are actually "Kill Specific Faction Members" missions in disguise. It just happens that most people from the specified faction will turn up wanted. In your Left MFD, under Transactions, you might be able to make sense of what faction you are expected to hunt. Then when you scan a target, check their faction in the Left MFD / Contacts Tab.

Good luck!

The way it works is a little bit more complicated than simply choosing "wanted" ships and destroying them, hence the offers for many different target types.

On the left hand panel, the contacts tab will give you more information about your target. Do they belong to the faction that runs the system? If so, attacking them will turn that entire faction temporarily hostile (i.e. until you jump or log out), and normally the security forces in the system will belong to the controlling faction.

Someone who is wanted isn't a pirate by necessity. There is typically a faction whose members are smugglers and pirates (e.g. a mafia), but smugglers won't count as pirates for kills. Other factions will also have pirates, it's just quite a bit less likely that they are ACTUALLY a pirate, and not just wanted for something else.

Try to identify pirates by their behaviour. Do they cargo scan you and taunt you? Do they have skull decals? The job is specifically asking you to kill NPCs who perform acts of piracy.

hi

happen to me often (having security ships shooting me for no reason). But as long as you don't shoot back you won't get the wanted status, so you can leave the zone and come back.
Still i think you can ticket this because it is not working as intended.

As for the pirate-kills counter, i don't know. Maybe it is only some faction's pirates you should hunt. But, again, it is not obvious at all and it feels like we don't have the correct info to perform the mission (at least the pirates faction).

Right there is the challenge... finding and shooting wanted ships is quite easy, ID'ing pirates takes a bit of work.

Granted. And that is why i said "at least the faction", seems realistic to me that a faction knows who are the pirates they want killed... Else how would they count your kills ? Others info may be too much.

But : i just tested and it is not completely faction related... (i shot one wanted from the faction giving the mission (part of Alliance), and another wanted ship from another faction (with no relation to alliance), and both were counted). Need more testing to grasp the mechanic...

Also here is a tip : avoid USS while doing those missions. If you meet someone giving you the alternative to hunt authorities ships, it will reset your pirate-kills counter !

What's more, the alternative mission was given by "the hang gang", a faction from a neighboring system, but i don't think any of the "pirates" i killed to fulfill this mission was from this faction...

a note from me is that in my case i found both of my target smugglers at USS, one guy told me not to attack and gave me the alternative offer... he was clean, so didnt take him down. But he told me where they are based.

I basically searched USS around that area and came up with both targets within about 10 minutes... worth a go?
