Engineers help understanding new roll system

As an older player on original engineers I had a basic understanding of the rolls for lvl 5, just keep rolling till you get a good hit or one you like. How does the new system work? I been upgrading from lvl 1 to 5 atm im at lvl3 already a lvl 3 roll has a better output than my lvl 5 roll (lvl5 roll was a good roll at that time). I have read some basic info that on this new system each roll improves the last roll, is this correct?

Also how does the crossover work from my old engineered item to the new? As I don't want to loose the stats on that part if I roll it on the new system.
Thanks

Under the new system, each roll is guaranteed to give you a better result.

Your old modules can be upgraded, but only if you go to the engineer. It'll start at the top of the next lowest tier, so a grade 4 will be at the top of grade 3 and so forth.

There's a new remote engineering option where you can continue to upgrade from various systems. Most all will have a remote engineer. You can't remotely upgrade your old modules and you can't add a special effect from those.

Special effects can be bought at the engineers. If you apply it at grade 1, it's as good as applying it at grade 5. So your visit to the engineer is a good time to buy the special. You can then gather other needed mats to continue the upgrades without losing the special.

There are material traders where you can trade mats for other mats at a cost. It's best to get the higher tier mats and trade down, rather than trade up or laterally.

Just to clarify,
"Under the new system, each roll is guaranteed to give you a better result." So is it limited to how many rolls you can do or is it unlimited but the roll outcome is better than the last?

Does the special get upgraded as well?

I dont have special effects of the internals of the ship only on weapons, shield and shield boosters. I didnt want to loose the affects I have on those items

Just to add to MottiKhan, to use remote workshops you need to pin the appropriate modification's blueprint, which can also only be done by visiting the engineer who does it.

Once you have a blueprint pinned (for example Long Range FSD modification), it will be good for all grades 1 through 5 (or to whatever grade that engineer can do) on any ship you want to upgrade, so long as your reputation with the engineer has those grades unlocked.

It's a useful feature. Go to the engineer, do a couple of low level modifications, apply an experimental effect and pin the blueprint. You won't need to revisit that engineer again for that module and you can complete the upgrade process at your leisure as you get hold of the required materials / data. You will also be able to upgrade other modules with that modification, and only need to visit the engineer for experimental effects.

In the current system 95% 5 grade upgredes (improved to the end) are better than in the old system. There are only minor exceptions if build was based on some specific statsits.

Each grade have their negative effects and they are permanent. For each roll brings positive effects, which grow randomly to the maximum value of the chosen Grade. For the new module, you start at 1 grade, and at 80% grade completed, another is unlocked. And so up to 5 grade.

If you already have a module in the old system, you can convert it. If you had him on grade 5, will be moved back to the maximum value of grade 4. So you must again roll up to max grade 5. (from 5 to 10 rolls).

In old system FSD have max 56% optimal mass, now max is 62% ;)

There's a maximum number of rolls that you an do until that level of upgrade is considered complete. Once complete, you can't roll at that grade again.

Special effects that depend on the grade will level as you level the grade, so a special applied at level 1 will become a grade 5 special at grade 5. The cost of the special is also the same, regardless of grade.

If you have legacy engineered modules with specials, I don't know if the specials will stay when you change to the new system. I kept some of my old weapons and modules because they were either good enough or would be worse in the new system.
