Help with Cruise Assist

So I have a mission which has an objective that I am trying to use the Super cruise assist feature to reach. When I get near, it tells me to hit "J" to deactivate super cruise, when I do, the edges of the screen go blue and it jumps me over 600 Ls away from my objective. I am really confused as to what is going on because it seems like rather than disengaging super cruise, it is jumping the FSD. A little help?

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking, but:
  • Arrive at system star
  • Target destination (if a clear path all good)
  • Engage Supercruise assist
  • You should either drop out at the station, or orbit the body if planetary installation.

The mission objective is a point out in space. When I get near it and supercruise begins to slow when I get <20Mm of the target, I get the "press J to disengage", but when I press J or even if I do not, it just boosts me way away again, like 600-2000 Ls away. I am wondering if the mission is bugged.

I'm with you - I'd suggest it is bugged - you may correct it just by dropping back to main menu and going back in, but bugged sounds very possible.
ETA: Supercruise assist, if used should drop you 'in' the objective, same as a station, I believe.

Sometimes I get this too, usually when my connection /servers are playing up.
Supercruise Assist should just drop you at your target automatically. If it's saying 'press j', ignore it, wait, then report back here with results.

... the only other thing I can thing is you are being interdicted - and if you have throttle zero (in SCA) then it will flash up the 'throttle down to submit' and dump you out with the blue tunnel. But you don't mention an NPC or dying, so maybe it is the n/w issue Speedcuffs has seen 🤷‍♀️
