Help with docking!!

Guys, I'm disgraced.

This thread - a newbie asking for help thread - turned almost instantly into a stupid flamewar between a couple posters, with various other cretins coming in to post deliberately stupid advice.

Go hang your heads in shame. You want this game to get a reputation for it's community being like Eve's?

Well, I may have missed something, but I believe the OP got a lot of helpful advice from a lot of different people, with several different strategies to approach his problem... If this thread is a flame war, then I guess most of them are forest fires...

As others have said - land it like an aeroplane. Swoop in low over the blast ramp. You might need a bit of vertical down thrust at the end if you are a little bit high.

He did get some, yeah. He also got people breaking into internet arguments over 'lying', and people from the VR cult telling him to go out and buy a specialist piece of hardware for 200 bucks.

I personally wouldn't have found docking in this game quite so easy if I hadn't cut my chops on a much harder problem with docking in Kerbal Space Program. But in that community, a newbie posting questions would be met with pages of tips and links to youtube video tutorials, with nary a cultist or fight breaking out. That is a community I'm proud to be a part of.

Why don't you go ahead and capture a video of a docking attempt? People will surely grasp on what it is you're doing wrong right away! That'd be easier than "assuming" what it is that you might be doing wrong.

How are you playing? Mouse/KB or HOTAS (flight stick with separate throttle - sorry if you already knew but I hate acronyms where people assume I know what they mean!!)?

If M/KB then I would suggest looking at getting a HOTAS as it makes land so easy. I have an older Saitek X45 (there are a few on the UK ebay currently going for about £30) and it makes landing a breeze. Joystick controls pitch and bank, the throttle forward/reverse, and there is a rudder control for yaw and two knobs for vertical and horizontal thrust.

I've tried using M/KB on my laptop at work, using the demo's to show colleagues, and it really is difficult to land compared to when I use my flight stick :D

OT (offtopic :D ) but that is a sweet avatar. Simple yet elegant.

all ships have different docking guidelines, look at your ship and if it has a big bottom ( no puns intended ) like the t6,t7 dock with your nose up like the space shuttle. some ships don`t need to be touching the floor - just get in line with the pad number to the back of the pad , and use the guide lights to get you into place, then slowly thruster down until docked

My tips:

Put 4 pips into SYS for max shields. The other 2 go in ENG. Max shields saves you from bumps and grinding against obstacles.

When 1 KM from the entry slot lower landing gear. This stops accidental boosting.

Put your throttle at 0 and use thrusters only. If you get into trouble, just take your finger off the thruster and your ship will come to a halt. Re-assess your position and then move on.

When directly over the pad, lower yourself slowly until you see the landing mini-game. Center your ship in the middle of the crosshairs and lower down to a perfect landing.

Hahahahaha

Seriously, docking is all about instincts. I never dock the same way twice. ;)

:D Gnepcoyi's videos are good - (Unarmed warrior is a classic too... )

As for docking - Manual docking is fine once you've practiced - I use a DC on T9's and Anacondas as they can dock as fast as me and I get time to make a coffee or speak to some of the humans around me. Elite is good for me - I've found that my family do miss me now and again :)

Awe man... I'm going to sound like a total noob, but I can only successfully dock 1 out of 10 tries. Its getting frustrating now.
I understand the need to align the ship until the dot goes blue, then lower it to the pad. When it makes contact, the ship begins to receive damage. its like the landing gear isn't down, but it is.
Any ideas??

Thanks

This might sound like a dumb question, but I don't want to assume anything. At what speed are you lowering it? If you do it too fast it will damage and not dock. If you lower it but you're angle is slightly off you might start blue and end in the red by the time you hit the sweet spot. So check your angle and check how fast you're lowering :) That's all I've got, sorry if it's unhelpful.

I am using an Xbox controller and the keyboard.

It worked!!!!!
I was pointing the wrong direction!!! I can't believe it was that stupid! Anyway. I am 3 for 3 attempts and all well under 1 minute!!

Thanks a ton for all your help!!
P.S. And no docking computer ;)

No question is really too stupid, if the intent is to learn. And you did! Nice stuff pilot and don't sweat the questions, we were all rookies at one point.

Don't worry OP, we all sucked at first. It's like riding a bicycle, at first it feels super complicated and you keep on getting it wrong but you'll get the hang of it and it will become second nature. Practice in the tutorial, then you don't have to worry about crashing your ship.

Once I docked my nearly destroyed Cobra with flight assist off and 8 seconds left of oxygen by entering the station.... backwards.... yea. No docking computers. I believe I have mastered docking even with FA OFF by now since I flap 1k ton ships like paper.

The struggle in the begging was REAL. I crashed just like you. Multiple times on the landing pad. Re-configured my controls until perfection was achieved. Smashed some more and got used to it. Keep trying it! It will make a better pilot in the end.

All the good advices were already given so I believe this is as much as I can help you! You will become a great pilot and commander! Trust in your instincts and flap that shi* around with FAOFF like your life depends on it!
