Help with finding materials

Phosphorous to be specific. I have watched the training vid but I cannot get my head around it (I'm probably being a bit thick!) I land on a planet, deploy my SRV and drive around, rocks everywhere, how to I find which one is worth shooting at? I can't find a scanner anywhere (like the one used to scan ships) and the wave scanner doesn't tell you so what am I doing wrong?

The scanner is part of the SRV.

When you are in the system map and select a planet the second tab shows what material can be found on that planet. Not all planets have Phosphorus. What you land watch the screen on the SRV that is above the radar. That is the scanner. It will slowly start peaking when you start getting closer to objects. It makes sounds also to let you know what type of anomaly it is.

You can also get Phosphorus from mining asteroids.

As Gun Star said, use the SRV scanner. When driving around, the scanner return will show a bunch of vertical blips in a pattern.

The pattern will be wide at first. Try to line up so the pattern is roughly centered on the scan. Head in that direction and you'll see the pattern shrink towards the middle of the scanner.

When you get close enough, you'll see a white dot on your radar. That's your target. Shoot it and you'll see sparks fly from it. It only take a few shots.

When the target explodes, get closer and you can scoop up the goodies.

You'll get the hang of it after the first one. It's just rinse and repeat after that.

The best place IMO is Dav's Hope. You can pick up a lot of manufactured mats at the abandoned mine and then wander off to collect the rocks. Just grab everything and you can use the mat traders to get what you're after.

You can get a load of mats from the Barnacles too. Much faster to fill up than surface prospecting, but it'll take a bit of travelling.

Shoot all rocks, meteorites etc that show up as targets - collect all the crap - no matter what it is - take to a material broker, trade it around to what you need.
