Hardware & Technical HELP with GTX 970

TODAY I switched to a Zotac GTX 970 4 GB from a 660ti 2GB and I am experiencing nightmare performances!!! Never happend with the 660 which gave me never less than 25 FPS (with config as below).

Now maxFPS is ~30, mostly I get ~15!
I ran furmark which gave me normal results of ~45 FPS at highest test level. But then I tried Farcry Primal which gave me 6 - 12 FPS!

What's wrong? HELP! :S :S

Thx!

CPU: i5-3550 CPU @ 3.30GHz, 8 GB, Win7Pro
2 Screens, borderless window

its too weak, you need to get the 900$ one for ED to work

What power supply are you using? to small could affect performance or drivers would be my first two things to check... also check the box for ED to rebuild shaders if its not done it already...

I personally use 1200 or 1000 watt PSU's and wouldnt recomend less than a 750 watt... if the card is not getting enough it will run in a lower performance mode until it dies... just food for thought...

im only using a 600 , fps in the 100s on ultra
g1 gigabyte 970 gtx superclock

Are you running Precission x16 with a Custom Fan graph to keep temps around 60degrees and also with KBoost ON? Needs this set on again after each Video Update.
Don't use SuperSampling but DSR instead can get 60fps most of the time.

Need more information, could you post what drivers you're using and also did you do a clean driver install?

Would also be helpful if you post your in game settings, what resolution, any supersampling etc...

Complete waste of money, a single GPU system will at most require a 600 watt PSU.

maybe the ones you build but I wouldn't trust my rig to just 600 watts and besides then you'll need to buy another one when you upgrade to SLI... O'well to each their own I guess...

[edit] Just for the record with the installed components in my rig http://www.evga.com/power-meter/ recommended a minimum 750 watt PSU and with the addition of a second video card went to 1000 watts so to make a generic claim like that was unwise and foolish IMO...

Rig Specs

I try to get the power usage figures for most computer items before I buy them. If building a new computer usually the last thing I buy is the PSU.
I build with spare 800W then measure usage with an electricity monitor plug http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/electricity-monitor-plug (Maplins also sell in the UK) and usually load the CPU and GPU with science data processing from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.php or one of the other BOINC projects. And allow enough spare for any later items like more RAM, Storage or 2nd GPU.

I haven't bought PSU over 600W for about 2 years for single GPU system.

FIRST: THANKS TO ALL!

To your questions:

- I had been running the system with 2 monitors & GTX 660ti for 3 years. It usually gave me 30 - 60 FPS running in borderless windowed mode and it was no problem to watch videos on the 2nd screen while roaming the galaxy...
- The power supply is 600 W, but I checked that the 970 has 145 W as power peak which is the same as the 660, before buying it. And if the energy demand would be too high, the whole system would not start as it did when I upgraded from a 460 to the 660 three years ago.
- Installing the driver: The last driver version was already installed on the system due to the 660, so there was no installation process triggered after putting the card in. After facing the problemes I cleanswept the whole driver, uninstalled all the additionall NVIDIA content and made a clean install of just the driver.
- Just in case it matters: Motherboard is a AS ROCK Z77 Pro3.
- The FurMark stress test gives me 30 - 40 FPS at the highest level, with the temperature rising to 80°C max. [cross-reference: There cant be an energy problem, otherwise this wouldnt work as well, would it?]

Looking forward for further input!

On the official website of NVidia, they indicate 500 watts for 970, 980 and 1070, 1080

Yes in this case, it is understandable

One suggestion, in addition to the forum here. If you type "fps problems with the gtx 970", for example, in google, you get a lot of links with this problem. Maybe you also find the solution. It seems to be a common problem and often resolved

Thanks, I did that. The suggestions reach from deep scan malware removal to CPU-Fan settings etc.
I checked most of them (malware removal for example), but nothing changed. I even updated my motherboards firmware.
Another benchmark test (Heaven Benchmark 4.0) worked fine, even with 2 monitors and ultra settings I got 30 - 50 fps.

One thing I have noticed, is that the CPU usage goes up to almost 100 % and a really big svchost.exe (470.000 K ?!?, probably managing the Elite data transfer) appears in the task manager when starting Elite.
I searched for opionions whether it could have been 'hijacked' by malware or a virus, but there is no clue in that direction available.

Strange, very strange.

Edit: I also noticed cracking noises in the sound/music when the frames skip...

You may get better fps upgrading to WIN10. It is butter smooth for me now. Only near asteroids the fps is around 40fps even using 2x DSR where as it use to be 25 with same setting.

Sounds like you have the drivers taken care of and we'll assume your PSU is fine did you try the rebuild shaders setting in the options? might be that or as mentioned before there are a few known issues with the 970 that googling it should give you somethings to look into...

Options -> Graphics -> Shader Preparations on Startup = ON
