Help with Logitech extreme 3D pro config

Firstly a big hello to everyone, I'm new to the forum.
I played the original Elite back in the 80s, so it's good to back in my trusted Sidwinder.
I just got my PC and I am overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to configure this joystick.
I have searched this forum, and there is a decent thread on the subject. But I am well and truly lost.
i need baby steps. I don't understand the whole dowoading the 'binds'. What to do with them?
Im happy to try someone else's configuration, but just need help in a step by step scenario on how to do it.
Anyone willing to help no so techno-newbie?
thanks
lee

I can't speak for anyone else, but I use an old logitech extreme 3d pro (which does drift a bit I must admit) and this is how I have it configured. over time you'll learn what you prefer and you'll adapt it to your needs.

fwd/back - pitch down and up
left/right - roll left and right
twist - yaw
throttle - throttle forward only (no middle detente)
hat switch - power config (eng/weap/sys/reset)
hat switch when landing gear is down - thrusters up/down/left/right

then we have buttons:
1 - fire primary
2 - fire secondary
3 - select target ahead
4 - select nearest hostile
5 - next firegroup
6 - deploy/retract hardpoints
7 - FSD
8 - headlook (I have an EDTracker)
9 - landing gear I think (I'm 1500ly from the core, I've not landed in a while ;)
10 - can't remember.. cargo scoop I think
11 - boots
12 - throttle reverse (sets the throttle to reverse while you hold down the button, generally I tend to uyse a keyboard key to thurst backwards on the odd time I need it)

I also have my numeric pad mapped to thrusters and the insert/del group mapped to (next/prev) target, subsystem and hostile.

and that's most of my mapping tbh. I use it for trading, combat and exploration and so far it's worked well for me. I'd like a fancy hotas setup and one day I'll get one. I'd like a joystick that doesn't drift and where all the buttons reactwithout pressing hard really but hey, this one works well enough :)

hope this helps?

I just did it. I was a little overwhelmed at first, too. I really like my setup, though. The joystick is plug and play, so you don't need to set it up through logitech's software in Win7. I'll explain my basics and you can go from there.

Firstly, when setting up your steering (pitch, roll, yaw), make sure you use the axis assignment and NOT the separate axis assignments below it. The separate assignments are for non-joysticks and wont have the analog functionality.

Use the X axis for pitch, the y for roll, and the twist (I forget the label) for yaw.

Ok now this is important. The docking override controls only work when your landing gear is out. So you can assign your hat switch to override while landing. Which is awesome. Make the hat thrust forward, back, left right. Then assign the two left thumb buttons as thrust up and thrust down. Boom, works awesome.

I use my hat switch while flying in a couple of ways. I have it set up to navigate my menus directionally, but when fighting it will use thrust.

The rest of your setup will depend on your playstyle. Good luck, and you'll figure it out once things start to click.

Thanks for the comments.
how do you have the 'hat' assigned to multiple things?
And I'm a little lost on what you mean by 'assign hat switch to over ride when landing'?
really need step by step guide here.

My first Extreme3d was super precise for 6 years until a box got dropped on it while moving. The replacement has developed axis drift that just gets worse as I bump up the deadzones. Seems like there was a QC drop. :(

Still my favorite joystick to date, fits my hand better than others I've tried. Just wish it worked better.

Aye, a good 'stick - but mine is now suffering after being heavily used for years. It'll have to do though - no cash for a replacement.

You have this wrong, what you need to do is think BIG!
.
I use TWO Logitech Extreme 3D pros! The reason for this is that throttle control IMHO in this game is secondary to thruster control. Once you enter a RES site etc. simply set the throttle in the middle of the blue and in combat control your forward/back speed with the thrusters. You only need to use the throttle when running or chasing. So on the right hand I have pitch/roll/yaw and on the left hand thrust forward-back/left-right/up-down. Full loadouts as below and instructions for setting them in the order they appear in the controls screen. POV is the hat. The OFF/ON refer to reversing the axis.
.
With this setup I never have to take my hands off the joysticks except to set the power pips and I do that via pre setup macro keys on a Logitech G110 keyboard so it's 1 key push to change settings. I would recommend having forward and back on the throttle as it makes rapidly reversing out of the docking slot much easier when you realise you have forgotten to ask for docking permission. :)

Elite Dangerous allows you to use dual key combos to perform tasks so instead of being limited to 12 buttons, you can change a 12 button stick easily into a 22 button stick, and that is by only designating 1 key as a designated /shift/ key.
Assigning two keys as shift keys allows you 30 key combos.

For example lets say you assign buttons 11 and 12 as "shift" keys you can assign tasks to buttons 1-10
Then 10 more tasks to Button 11+buttons 1-10
Then 10 more tasks to Button 12+buttons 1-10.

The cool thing this does is allow you to assign the same action to similar functions.
For example. Shift 11 + Hat up might be previous ship, Button 11+down might be next shipe, and 12+hat up might be previous subsystem and 12+hat down might be next subsystem.

Think outside the box and rethink the whole joystick and you'll rarely need to touch the keyboard, and if you use the shift keys logically, then you won't have a lot to "remember"

I have 4 shift keys, one for each category: Power, Targeting, Weapons, UI
I then assign keys to the remaining 8 keys and hat according to their category.

In the options menu, the first thing you will see is your control setup. As you scroll down, you will see options under the heading of "docking override" or something to that degree (sorry game isn't fired up and i can't check). You will see the same options as above. Pitch, Roll, Yaw, Thrust, etc. Only, now that you assign those keys, they will only function when your landing gear is deployed. No need to set a button to switch control schemes or anything. It's really intuitive.

...Well, not the options menu. Hey dev's, fix the options menu and add some tabs. The endless scroll is bad design. What century is this????

brilliant joysticks :) My 'old' one was getting too problematic with axis drift but more so with one of my buttons needing to be bashed way too hard to work and even then it was spotty at best... so I lashed out and spent a whole 40 bucks on a new one... They work well, easy to configure in the game bindings and have toyed with the idea of running 2 of them but not tried that yet, perhaps that will be the next step, try the second one (old one) and if that seems to work well then see about getting (or making) a left handed version of the grip

Geezus, you guys make my head hurt! I too have a Extreme 3D pro, albeit sitting right next to my Saitek backlit keyboard, oh and they are both silver and black, so pretty.

You don't know how lucky you are! When I first started using two identical joysticks Elite couldn't cope and put all the bindings on the same stick each time you started playing. So the first thing you would have to do is set 50+ bindings every time you started the game and if you got just one binding wrong you had to start the whole lot all over again. That's why I had the list I posted as there was no way you could remember it all.
.
It was a pain in the rear but you did get to memorize where all the key bindings were. I had to raise a bug and it got fixed (in 1.1 I think).

I use a Logitech 3d Pro Extreme myself.

My layout is a "what works for me" approach:

I use the stick itself for my flight controls in classic Inverted configuration, with the stick twist bound to roll.

Trigger: Primary Fire
Thumb Trigger: Secondary Fire
Hat switch: Thrusters Up/Down Left/Right
Top left button: Lock Target
Bottom left button: Change Firing Group
Top Right Button: Frame Shift jump
Bottom Right button: Boost
Throttle Lever: Radar Zoom
Side buttons -
Top Left: Deploy Heatsink
Middle Left: Deploy Shield Cell
Bottom Left: Deploy Chaff
Top Right: Ship Lights on/off
Middle Right: Cargo Scoop
Bottom Right: Landing Gear

I also picked up a CH Pro Throttle for the full HOTAS effect, and I've been loving it ever since. Prior to that, I used a couple "special function" keybinds:

Shift+Hat Up: Increase Thottle
Shift+Hat Down: Decrease Throttle
CTRL+Hat Up: Vertical Thrusters +
CTRL+Hat Down: Vertical Thrusters -
ALT+Hat Up: Forward Thrusters
ALT+Hat Down: Reverse Thrusters

A few tips:
Run the Windows joystick calibration a couple times - it helps with "drift"
Set a dead-zone of roughly 1/4 of an inch for the stick. This makes a HUGE difference.

Also another Logi Extreme 3D Pro user.

I have the basics bound to the joystick itself, don't really use the keys available on the base of it and everything else is bound on the keyboard.

So on the stick I have:

Roll/Pitch - Joystick fwd/bwd/left/right
Lateral/Vertical thrust - Hat switch
Yaw - twist
Targeting / Next target / Next threat - 1-3 on top of the stick
Secondary fire - #4 on top of the stick
Boost - Thumb
primary weapons fire - Trigger

I use the keyboard for throttle control and pretty much everything else. Never have to take my hand off of the stick unless I want to do some freelook with the mouse. After two years of playing I don't really ever need to hunt for buttons unless it's something obscure like the hotkey to disable/enable planetary path/trail markings in supercruise.

I've been using this stick for about 6 years now and aside from increasing the deadzone on the yaw to account for some straying in the sensors it's never given me an issue in either flight sims or ED.

Dual sticks does appeal to me. I'm trying to decide between another logitech or for the left hand stick , maybe the Thrustmaster 16000m mainly because its ambidextrous and the logitech feels a bit weird in my left hand . In the meantime I am playing with control keys on my right hand stick to see how many functions I can remove from the keyboard - at least until I get more space.
I'm missing the elite controller to be honest where I had throttle on the paddles but I'm determined to get the sticks working because I have a feeling the dual sticks will be pretty good in a fight and the sticks just seem more 'in character' .

For those of you with joystick drift, you just need to calibrate your joystick. In Logitech Profiler, click Devices > Game Controllers, then hold down Ctrl and Shift keys and click the Advanced button. Click Reset to Default, then click Calibrate and follow the steps. (I have no idea as to why they've hidden such a necessary feature.)

I also find that enlarging the "dead zone" inside E:D control settings can help.

As others have mentioned above, E:D allows for multiple key/button combinations. I have a foot-pedal with 3 keys. I've set 2 keys to Left-Ctrl and Left-Shift, which I use to expand on the 12 joystick buttons (for 36 actions). The third key is set to Esc, for easy access to the main menu.
