Newcomer / Intro Help with making some coin!

So, I feel like Im missing something...

I have been running trade runs for a couple of days now non stop in my Hauler outfitted with as much cargo as I can... I just broke 60k credits... am I doing something wrong? I see other people talking about breaking millions and Im wondering what I might be missing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Most of the gigillionaires are Alpha/Beta/Gamma backers who worked out some advantages. The game is different now and you're doing fine. If you just fly around aimlessly you will make money

P.s. the hauler is great.

Yeahp, there was no save wipe on launch, so the early backers have had months to build up their wealth. I've found that there's something of a snowball effect with earning money in this game, it starts off slow but you'll get more and more as you upgrade.

Although really, what I love about this game is that I never actually feel the need to actively make money and progress, I can just do whatever takes my fancy at the time. The fact that you get paid for flying around gawking at the pretty planets is pretty amazing, since that's what I do in every game anyway :p

If you're in a hauler you might profit from looking into rare goods runs.

Rare goods are special goods that only appear in one system, and in quantities of not more than 20 or so. They increase in value the farther you get from where they were sold; if you get 150ly or so away you can make 10-15k profit *per tonne*.

People do runs where they shuttle between two rare goods systems that are about 150ly apart, you'll want a fuel scoop but the profits can be impressive.

This thread is a great piece of work and has the locations of 65 (and counting) rare goods stations.

Thanks all, I don't know why I did not think about the early backers.. that makes more sense, Im in no hurry mind you just did not want to be missing out on some key element or such!

Personally credits are my lowest concern, my priority is getting in with the Alliance and the credits kinda roll in along with that.
And with the speed of reputation, I'll be a millionaire before I get into Alioth anyway. :p

Actually, I think all the Beta / Gamma / Backers still got wiped in November, so they haven't had all that long to build up. One tip for early play is to look at the Bulletin Board and do missions (especially hauling missions) in tandem with your cargo runs. There can be very good synergies there. Just pick missions (and cargo, using any extra space you have) for the same intended destination and you can more than double your profits per hop. Also, the more expensive the commodity you are moving, generally the more profit margin there will be per unit - that is not always true, however: I've made more profit per unit of Food Cartridges than Palladium, at specific destination stations. Stick in a group of systems with complementary economies and learn their markets, and you can make credits rapidly.
