Hi, I'm playing RCT 3 Platinum and I have read that there's this Passport Machine (under Path Extras) which can allow visitors to collect a souvenir after they visited certain rides in the theme park....
Passport machines have nothing to do with rides. They are a separate entity in their own right.
Basically you add passport machines to your park because there will be some peeps that will want to collect all of the passports (I think you can set a "prize" for getting them all).
You can use them to encourage the peeps to areas where they wouldn't necessarily go, and if they have to walk past a bunch of rides they might go on them. But if it's a crap ride they'll still not go on it.
If a peep has a passport already it seems like they are more likely to go after the others; so I normally to put a couple of passport points in high traffic areas (one by the entrance, and one in each of my food areas). I might be wrong on that one though.
