Ships Help with pvp progression for ships?

I am trying to understand the progression for PVE and PVP based on picking ships.

From what I can understand, for PvE you can generally go with whatever you want based on the role and needs of your ship. After some engineering and updates, you can do nearly all of the PvE content. For PvP, you can generally pick whatever you want but you are going to be limited in what you can do against players. What I mean by this is if I want to fight in PvP (not just evade) I have to pick certain ships right?
I
personally love the smaller ships like the Viper Mk3, Imperial Courier, Eagles, Diamondbacks, and the Cobras. I am warming up to the idea of a Vulture. However, unless I am fighting similar types ships I feel like I am going to get lit up by the players with the medium or large ships. I totally get that some ships are (or should be) counters to other ships. However, what is a good PvP ship that can hold its own against many others without feeling like I am flying a frigate around. Vulture? Courier looks cool.

Am I missing something?

Maybe a list of ships that can hold their own in pvp and ones that just cannot overcome without just evading?

I also understand that I will need to have more than one ship. I want an explorer ship, a cargo runner/multirole, and a strictly combat PvP ship.

it's Player v player not ship v ship....

If you pick the right target, have the right tactics and a little helping of luck you'll win....

But jump into the PvP/Playstyles area of the forums to ask this question. more will answer it there but be ready for the 'just grab a FDL' line of meta followers :)

Well, there are three or four kinds of PvP.
1. Organic, anything can happen....and the best ship for that is very situational based on what you are countering.
2. Organized, either in wings or dueling.
3. CQC arena.

For 1 or 2 you cannot go wrong with a FDL or Mamba.
For 2 I would suggest a FDL but a Mamba might work, too. I don't have enough experiences with Mambi to judge.

The viper, courier and eagles are fun to fly but they simply do not have the firepower to be taken seriously in anything but a special effects role in PvP.

The FDL is the most like the viper3 of all the mediums and is pretty much the only ship I am obsessed about. The FDL is so much fun to fly for me because it is very sensitive, maneuverable and difficult to master. It can do so much if you have the chops. I have four fully engineered FDLs and a bunch of storage ones.

Don't let the assymetrical bar deter you, you will need all your awareness on your vector and the opponent's vector, etc. that the view becomes inconsequential.

There is a chasm of ability between an NPC and human. Fighting humans in 6 dof is no joke.

And it is wonderful.

In PVP there is certainly such thing as meta. It exists in every game. However, this game like no other gives a player all the opportunities and tools to overcome an apparent disparity in ship power. I remember seeing this hilarious video of a Sidewinder with a mine launcher slowly dismantling a Clipper using a rather strange, but totally proprietary for this build tactics.
In short - there is a progression, but you can learn to make just about anything work. If you don't care about just winning and flying ships considered meta I can highly recommend Courier. It's a ship that is incredibly fun to fly. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee ;)
Also, it's got one badass looking cockpit.
For a fun, yet totally intimidating ship I can't recommend Federal Assault Ship enough. Hull tanking isn't exactly name of the game this season, but don't let it fool you. This bad boy can do things you won't believe. It's very heavy. It's very fast. It's very maneuverable. It has excellent hardpoint configuration for all fixed builds. It reminds me of F-4 Phantom, which had reputation for being very heavy but also very fast. Named my FAS "Spooky" as a reference to my favorite aircraft :)

Buy and outfit which ship you feel comfortable with.

Learn how to use the coms (at least get a basic understanding of typing a message and reading messages)

Fly the ship near some popular engineer bases in open play.

You will meet some pvp players.

When they attack you, try to fight back, rather than run.

You will lose, but thats fine.

Speak on the coms to them.

You will open up a whole new world.
