Newcomer / Intro Help with PVP

Hey all....

I like to play in open play to add a layer of challenge. However there is a player "CMDR xxxx xxx" in Sothis who consistently hunts and destroys me. No opportunity to negotiate or anything, he just hunts me down. I'm sure it's not personal, it's just some guy fighting. He's very very good at fighting. I die within 12-18 seconds. However, it's gotten old. He's a good fighter.. and I'd love an opportunity to partner with someone to "spank" him back once or twice. Would anyone be interested in getting together to help me give him an honest fight, instead of him just blowing me away? I'd sure apprecfiate it.

1) no "Naming and shaming" on the forum, so you better edit out the name before the mods delete your post.
2) any of the established PvP oriented player groups will do this - maybe even check with the Galactic Academy (link at the top of the page)
3) have you tried contacting your opponent in-game? If he doesn't respond or becomes too annoying, you can also block him (Comms panel, history tab, find the player, blocking is somewhere in the options after selecting him). This is reversible.

Or!!! Engineer your ship for pvp.
So quick recharging shields.
Heavy hitting weapons like short range rails or PA's.
Build for cool running to offset heat!
Reactive armour deep plated.
As much armour as you can squeeze on. Engineer all of them.
An FDL or chieftain is a good start.
Get gud!!
Don't forget ...smaller shields recharge quicker!!
If you wanna stack shields get prismatics.
Also... heatsinks are fab to offset heat ,, but they also render you almost untargetable for a few seconds ...use this!
X3 heatsinks engineered.

I don't know the specifics of your current build/engineering but if you're getting fed up you can always try 4 pips to sys/chaff and immediately high waking to another system when they interdict you. It's really not so easy to destroy a ship in the brief moments it takes to jump out, it could frustrate them enough to leave you alone if you do this a couple of times...

Ah well, if you want to frustrate them... get a high speed build (basically any small ship that takes Enhanced Thrusters), engineer it for speed and equip it with a FSD interdictor.
Then boost off at >800 m/s (not in a straight line for preference - if they have equipped long range rails, those can still hurt you). Rinse, repeat.

There are multiple options.

Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to use one of the following.

Use Solo, Group and Open modes to your advantage.
Know the systems where players are likely to kill you.
Use System | Chat to converse with a player in any mode in a given system.
Killed? Block the player in the main menu.
Become proficient at the mini-interdiction game always winning.
Lost? High wake instead of low wake to escape avoiding mass locks and another local interdiction.
Use the legal 15 second delay when under attack to logout to the main menu.
Log back in Solo mode to continue on, dock, repair ship etc.
Engineer your ship and improve flying skills to provide better defense and last longer to escape.
Play a year with others mastering combat and engineering your ship to become the hunter instead of the prey.
Wing up with others to improve combat success.

Learn the tricks.
Fly to s system in Solo mode. Do your thing then leave in Open mode jumping out.
Go Open mode far away from stations to see what is going on then Solo if 3 hollow squares are approaching you.
There are many more.

Want to meet players in Open? No problem. Many are friendly wanting the same.
Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to use one of the above when needed.

There are groups such a Mobius where shooting other players are not allowed but I rarely see anyone in them.
Nor is there a 'Safe Zone' in ED but with experience one can minimize any danger from live players.

Regards

Thanks for the advice. I'd had trouble with pve in the past getting interdicted and not surviving (on a Type 9), so I followed a lot of the advice given then. I'm currently running different missions of "we need xxx amount of xxx" that pay lucratively, so a small/faster ship works.
I'm currently flying a Phantom equipped as follows:
  • 6D Thrusters / Dirty mod max
  • 3D Bi-Weave Shield generator
  • 3D Guardian Shield booster
  • 4 2F Pulse Laser (turreted)
  • 2 OA Shield boosters
  • OI Point defense
  • heatsink

I've practiced challenging interdictions and haven't failed a single on PVE or PVP until this same guy. I have submitted to some interdictions, and put 3 pips in sys, 2 in engine and 1 in weaps. Then engaged the turreted weaps and boosted boosted boosted away. I've barely taken a dent in my shields and nothing PVP or PVE has caught up to me. Except this guy. He somehow manages to keep up with me, shreds my shields in seconds and while I'm charging to FSD out, he blows me up.

My ship by my design is a trader. I have a MK IV and a Vulture I use for combat, but this ship I tried to find the balance between adequate cargo (128) a crazy fast FSD (49ly range), fast thrusters with some reasonable balanced weaps and shields to allow me to outrun them.

He always gets me in one of two systems. And I encounter other players both friendly and pirates as well, and those are fair fights... most I win, a few I lose, but they're much more balanced, that if I lose, it's after doing all the skillful flying I can and using my ship to it's best advantage, and it takes at least a minute or so. The interdiction also is insanely fast, taking about 4 seconds, even though I'm fighting it, whereas most interdictions PVE take 20 seconds and PVP take at least 10.

A couple questions:
  • If I see him again and block him in chat, does that block him from seeing me in the future? Like I just wont show up for him anymore? He never chats me, or replies to my chats. He never makes demands for cargo or anything, he just annihilates me.
  • What is the legal 15-second delay to logout to the main menu? Because in 15 seconds, I'll be very dead.
  • I haven't loaded chaff, but if that would really help I could try it.
  • What does launching a heatsink do to interrupt combat?

Thanks for the advice

If he/she is using gimballed weapons then chaff will cause his weapons to bounce about and they’ll struggle to land hits on you. Using a heat sink will lower your thermal signature and opponents will struggle to target lock you for a few moments.

Combine both together to buy yourself some moments...

I’d look to work on your shield strength, it’s not looking so hot even with the guardian booster.

Get your shield boosters engineered, resistance augmented, even g1 from Farseer will do if she’s all you have.
Thermal resistant shields from Elvira Martuuk wouldn’t hurt either...

If you block someone it should stop them from showing up in the same instance as yourself.

Get rid of the Bi-weaves and replace them with standards (or prismos, if you don't mind working for Princess Anime for a month to unlock them). The only thing you're gaining from bi-weaves is recharge speed, which you don't need for a ship that isn't interested in staying around to fight. You can recharge all you want in SC after you've high waked away from the threat. You ARE losing quite a bit of raw shield strength with bi-weaves, though, which you DO need. Also think about upgrading them to an A module. More shield strength, just a bit of added weight.

Same goes for your thrusters. The D's are fine for an explorer, but since you're trading/mission running, a bit of lost range shouldn't be much of a worry for you, and you need all the maneuverability and speed you can get when trying to run. Consider A's, stick with the dirty mods, you got that right. I'd personally rather have chaff than PD, but that's a personal preference.

Blocking makes you and him cease to exist to each other, meaning you can't appear in the same "instance."

The 15 second delay is there to keep people from menu logging out of a fight they're losing. It's basically a trade off necessary to not just make it a "legal alternative" to combat logging (disconnecting your router/Alt-F4'ing the game).

Fly safe, CMDR!

Put the best thrusters in, fundamentally if you can't get away then it doesn't matter how quickly you could do the mission in your fit-out, if you can't get away you can't finish the mission.

Another tip is shock wave mines. Drop these out of your tail as u high wake...hehehe...he Will spin like a top after hitting a few...buying you more time.

Paging @Sir Ganksalot - you two should get in thouch....
OP wants to learn, you are into teaching...

That is rather silly. You cannot charge your FSD with hardpoints deployed so engaging in such activity would merely increase your vulnerability and reduce your chances of h-wake in time.

Yep.
Using mines is not that easy as it sounds. Not as effective as seen in YT movies either.
They have an arm timer, so you cant just bomb with them
They are very visible on radar and easily avoidable
PDT is simply wasting them...

........

I see more people (for longer) in Mobius than in open - in mobius you get the occasional chat, in open you hardly ever get a response other than the hollow icon suddenly disappearing.
