Help with X-52 set up

So I'm coming back to ED after a 2 year gap (other things to do and my old X52 broke).

Finally got a new X52 and I'm having loads of issues setting it up. Seems like the way the controls work has changed. Is there any way to for example use the same hat switch to do different things dependent on what you are focused on?

I used to have it so that the hat switch on the throttle fires the direction thrusters when flying and when looking at one of the three main screens I used it to navigate in each of the panes. Can't seem to manage that now. It does one thing or the other, not both.

So, can you change controls based on what you are focused on or can anyone provide me with a good working setup so I don't have to spend the next six days farting around with it?

I don’t think you can have multiple actions based on where you are focused, I have ended up binding 2 buttons at once to do certain things. I believe voice attack is helpful in that situation if you have run out of buttons.
