You got it Mort. That was the problem. Thanks so much to all who contributed.

I disabled the "phantom" monitor in the settings and that solved the issue. Runs like a dream now.

You, my friend, are totally on to something. I only have one monitor plugged in. However, when I go to my screen resolution settings, it shows that I have two. The actual monitor is set as the no. 2 monitor and it is set as the main display. The other monitor that actually does not even exist is set as the no. 1 display and is off to the upper right corner...exactly where the game window opens. I moved the little monitor to the bottom right and ran the game and the window opened on the bottom right...clearly the game is trying to run in the little monitor that does not exist. How do I get rid of that stupid thing?

I do not know win8 but try deleting the monitor? Or try changing default monitor to your main? No idea why you have a ghost monitor.
