I agree with you. It would need to be a compromise. I don't see why so many people are against higher rewards for open play when the associated risk is so much higher as well. Risk vs reward. That is what it's all about.

I'm of the opinion that Open is it's own reward and that it shouldn't require a bribe.

Because of the game's networking model and other mechanisms, there are also ways to select the Open mode and play what is effectively a private group or solo.

Just because this is one of the best space games out there doesn't mean it's perfect, or finished, or even remotely close to what was envisioned and promised from the beginning. I don't want to knock what the game is, because it's a great game. Having watched some of these major changes take effect, that I felt made the game WORSE, rather than better, it is a little frustrating to see. I have over 3500 hours playing ED. It's more obsession than fun at this point. And one of the main reasons I keep playing is because I have hopes that they will improve the game at some point.

I feel much the same way.

Elite: Dangerous is my current favorite video game, but that doesn't blind me to it's flaws, nor does obfuscate the fact that I still only have a small portion of the experience I was sold on when I made my initial purchase.

If anything, my appreciation of the positives makes the negatives all the more glaring. If something is a lost cause or wholly without value, it's easy to abandon and move on. When something is mostly good, or has enormous potential to be better, not living up to that potential gets frustrating.

The only problem I see is accepting a mission in Solo and then switching to Open might cause problems. But then the solution to that is to give a bonus, say 15% to 25% for performing the mission, from launch to destination, while actually in space, in Open play. If you spend any time AT ALL in Solo while in space, the bonus would be rescinded. This would include (meaning nullify the bonus) if you switched to Solo at destination because all pads were full. I know, I know; "But I didn't do it to avoid danger." Sorry. Don't care why you did it. You only get the bonus if you spend all your time in space in Open play. Any exceptions or excuses could too easily be misused and abused.

I see other problems.

Firstly, we have the block feature which while not a guarantee of safety, can dramatically skew instancing, and is officially sanctioned.

Secondly, the game is peer-to-peer and Frontier has no real way of knowing why a connection to another peer could not be established. This makes it completely possible to select Open, and then simply block all peer connections for the game, or only allow those of specific other individuals, which would result in all the benefits of Open, while playing in a de facto private group or solo.

Yeah. I see what you mean. It's a thorny problem.
