Herding

To set the record straight, there is herding int he game. The AMA confirmed it with "Dinosaurs have a Social tab in their stats, which indicates how they prefer to live in their enclosures. A Ceratosaurus for example won't tolerate as many friends, whereas a Struthiomimus prefers a large herd. They also have a "socialise" action, which is when they will move together and communicate. It's up to you how you form your herds, and find out which species go well together." and as well they group of guys that played the game last week confirmed it as well.

I'll say it here instead of the other thread.

There are indeed herding mechanics. That is not up for questioning. What is up for questioning is how Frontier goes about those mechanics. I, personally, think there needs to be more variety in how herding is showcased so it feels like proper animal behavior. Also, we've seen mostly small enclosures, without a good look at what herding looks like due to space restriction. The only exception is the sauropod enclosures, in which we do see the animals grouping together, namely the sauropods themselves.

Definitely is a part of the game though. Pack hunting/attacks are not though, unfortunately. Confirmed in the AMA.

Exactly, and we really haven't seen enough in a group to know exactly how they will react.

true but aren't there always gonna be somebody that have to be negative on these forums :D would be a miracle if they stopped

If you are expecting herding like you saw in the movies you are just setting yourself up for disappointment. This is a game. Not a wild life documentary. A game where you will be keeping Dinosaurs in some pretty small enclosures. There probably isn't enough room for a huge herd of animals to all run together.

Exactly, I think its amazing that they can talk to eachother, and even different speices will move together.

In a week we'll know for sure how the herding is done on release frontier have been pretty receptive to feedback and you would like to think they will continue that post release.

It feels like there's alot of pressure to release around the time of the film which is fair enough its when hype is gonna be highest so you would think post release they'll polish the game up.

Not ideal as you want the finished article but its just not how gaming is these days on any format.

If everyone had seen all the videos they wouldn't even worry about it anymore ;)

But then they wouldn't have anything to whine about. They would just make stuff up to whine about.

A lot of them just need to shut up and go away if they are that unhappy with the game. It isn't going to live up to their unrealistic expectations. So there is no point coming here and trashing up the forums with their whiny posts.

Oh, definitely not expecting that. But I do want there be enough for there to be a sense of immersion. For me at least, it's not quite there yet.

I wouldn't say that herding as seen in the movies is impossible in a game. All I'm looking for is a group of herbivores that movie together in a herd...and to have pack hunters like raptors hunt in packs and take down prey in packs. So far it doesn't look like that's in the game but I haven't seen all videos or read everything on the game. I don't think that's too much to ask for either and I do hope that they'll look into adding that later on if it's not already in the game in one form or another.

The issue is that is might not be much to ask for, but codding wise it could be months of work to do since everyhting was programmed for one on one due to time constraints

Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows. We'll wait and see. But if many people want it maybe they'll look into it. I'm very much hoping for it.

Does anyone have any solid info about herding behavior? Everything I’ve tried to find about it seems very vague. I’ve seen the video with a group of galamimus “talking” with one another but that’s about it. Is that what they mean by herding? Can the dinosaurs of the same/similar species group up and move, or do they all just run/walk around like they have ADD like in JPOG.
The downside to herding could be that you would have a large enclosure and a clump of dinosaurs all stuck together instead of being spread out. Might look a bit off. Coding for that could be a real pain. Yeah thinking more about it the devs probably made the right call. It sounds great on paper but when it actually is in play it could be a total disappointment.

I wish I knew where it was, but there are videos out there where different species will actually walk together like a heard.

they'll walk together giving the impression of a herd but don't expect any herd like behaviour like group defence, they'll most likely scatter and run.

See that’s at least cool. This game is going to be fun either way. I’ve decided to stay clear of anything on Reddit lol.

Herding animals usually have huge amounts of open space. This game lacks that. Even Sorna and Nublar wouldn't be big enough. A lot of the Dinosaurs in this game are even bigger than our modern day mammals, even the big ones. I would say expecting them to make large herds is a bit unrealistic.
