here is something you might not like ....

..... Elite: Dangerous is a computer game ... there, I said it !
Someone had to ... am I the only old B'stard to still enjoy a game for it's entertainment value other than the FACTS of reality (which I like to escape by playing games) .. I sometimes feel out of place here, as there are so many debates on realism, immersion, actual fact .. I feel people are taking things a little too seriously .. why so serious ? (Sorry:eek:)

ED is the game I have been waiting for since playing the original on the BBC micro, modern graphics ..more content .. (It is known that I hated FE2 and FFE) so to those that have been waiting since the sequels .... I have been waiting longer ... and I like what I see, even though I have had to delete my ED slideshow wallpapers as the wait is killing me .. (Premium Beta here)

Now a nice debate is always good, but ... (there is always a but, just look at Jennifer Lopez ... but with 2 T's, bad joke ) nit-picking at fact, is really annoying (to me) Space station is turning too fast, not fast enough, ships fly like planes .. eggs don't cook that way (My imagination did that last one) let the GAME be a GAME ... realism be dammed .. in my computer game life I must have killed thousands .... if not hundreds of thousands ... That's not real ..(But it was fun)... Lets leave the realism to real life and lets give a little leeway to FD for the making of a great game.
If a mistake is made in Physics, engineering or mostly in FACT .. let it slide for the sake of a great game ..

After all ...... I am not Sam Fisher.

So in summery, forget what is possible, what is real and what scientists have discovered ... just go with it ... we will be fine ... ED is going to be fantastic even if it is fantastical.

No, you're wrong... and we NEED TressFX! It's the only realistic hair simulation I've seen; if TressFX doesn't go in the game I am demanding a refund from Frontier and flouncing off the forums!

i sort of agree with you as realism often has to take a backseat to gameplay but saying that it does help with the suspension of disbelief if when it does wander away from science it doesn't do so too noticeably.

David Braben disagrees with you :p Frontier are going to a lot of effort to combine both realism and brilliant gameplay. It's going to be amazing and everyone will be very happy! :D

to be honest i think it is nice to have a fusion of the 2.

Fun should never trump realism, but if it is possible to have both I say go with it**.
I kind of agree however that the fun factor of dogfighting in Frontier and FF3 was just not there for me (subjective) (and i still but hundreds of hrs into both). ED seems to have gone for a nice balance of a flight model based around realistic physics but still arcadey enough to be able to have fantastic space battles.

**(in the same way that eye candy should never be at the expense of gameplay, but, I say for those of us with decent hardware I want eye candy with my game play, leave the compromises to the conso...... no, I best not go there ;) )

A couple of games that I have enjoyed most in the last few months are Splinter cell: Blacklist & South park: the sick of truth and at no point did I feel I was an assassin for the American government or a large headed 6 year old defeating the spawn of Khloe Kardashian ... and at no point that lack of feeling was detrimental to the game ... just saying... :)

Agreed. If the realism supports the gameplay, that's great. But being dogmatic in the pursuit of realism has sunk many a game before now. Playability is all.

Remember, what you read on the forums is largely noise and I imagine FD are experienced enough to get the game balance right.

ED is nowhere near reality. I'm not sure what the rest of your post is about given that.

FD haven't chosen to evolve the frontier games, they've tried to take the original Elite game and make it modern just like you want.

Oh, I get that (Been here a while :))... just like to throw a ball out once in a while ... see who fetches it :) .. but my friend .. you are spot on ...

I have absolutely no problem with the way FD are handling the game, just a little bored of the Realism, Immersion debates ..that's all .. it's just my bug-bear .. and mine alone .. just getting impatient for Premium Beta, had no good ideas for a drabble recently .. so thought I would just say what I did, which I did .. I feel it was a success :D ..... and FD are making the game I want .. no question!

Immersion is different from realism, in my books. It's about focused gameplay, no distractions, no fiddly interface, etc. I find Geometry Wars to be incredibly immersive for instance.

I agree that some debates are about redundant features in the game, but others are not imo. If you follow the game development in the past 20 years, you will notice that games in the 3D genre generally tend to be more and more realistic. Mostly due to improved graphics.

What we have here is rather unique: The genre of space sims had its peak in the 90s and now E-D (together with SC) is an attempt to revive this genre once again. But to make an impact on the market you have to produce something original. Procedural games are not original anymore, you really need something new.

People were filled up with X- or Freelancer-style space games. These games which approach space flight as a convetional 3D shooter (i.e. you fly around in a certain map with ships of various speeds) are fun - no doubt - but outdated. Therefore I find debates about the general directions which this game should take very good. Dont we all want that it will be at least as successful than the ones in the 90s?

Like the OP I only played the original. The sequels coincided with the arrival of babies and dirty nappies. My view is make a great game and if the science under pins it that's great but its not the key thing for me. However it would also be a mistake to remove all the science.

Oh yes. Elite: Dangerous is a Science Fiction Game. Remove the "Science" or "Fiction" from it and it becomes something else.

Mid you everyone, I think that E: D will be something else, but in a good way, and will still be entertaining sci-fi experience.

Think these discussions are going on to keep people busy whilst they wait otherwise it would be just silence...and waiting. I would much rather read interesting topics on the forum than just see ... nothing. I dont agree with a lot of it, but I think its all pretty harmless fun.

So no I dont agree with you at all in the main about the forum topics, but I do agree that gameplay is good and realism is not everything. And I loved Frontier and First Encounters and I never played the original Elite, so there you go.
