Hesitating - three questions if I may

Greetings everyone!

To skip the who am I part I'd just like to tell that I'm one of those old boys who remember the original Elite back in the days of it's release :) And yeah, I liked that a lot :D

Anyway... I'm still hesitating if I should back up the project in it's current form. I mean I love all those space sims (and not sims too). I have backed Star Citizen too (don't eat me please). However, after big disapointment caused by fail release of X Rebirth (which I had many hopes for), I'm trying to get back to the original state of mind and stay sceptical about new releases.
I have read some topics about ED, but would you, backers already, be so kind to change my mind and make me put some $$ in this project too?

Second thing I'd like to ask about is (well, that's mostly targeted towards Devs) how much the "back this up" options are going to change after 6th Dec? Could you share some light on that?

And last but not least would you, 75+ GBP backers tell me if it's really worth to back up the project to that point to be able to read all those posts in private section of the forum? I mean, I'm not asking to reveal secrets lying there - just curious if there is much to be found there about the upcoming game? Please, be honest about that

Well, that's all. Thank you very much for attention and possible answears.

Best regards to you all!
Hampius

Hi mate!

I would say it worth backing :) . I'm a space sim nut and most of my Elite experience comes from being a young teenager in the 90's (Frontier Elite II) . I was initially excited for X-Rebirth but got bad vibes from it after watching one of the videos they released so think I'll give it a miss. It's a risk backing any game that hasn't been released (Godus urrgghh) but if you have a good feeling about it, just go for it !!

Welcome Commander! :D

3. Yes! A thousand times yes!
It is so much fun seeing all the sneak peek stuff and getting involved in the conflab ;)

Come and join us ;)

I found a perfectly reasonable excuse to back this project up every level to alpha.

The private backers forum is one of my favourite forum haunts but theres little extra in the way of secrets there. I wouldnt pay £75 just to get that access. Now for just a little more money the boxed collectors edition... and just a little more to beta access...

I pt £80 in to hit that sweet spot of many start options plus all future updates, then went and added an extra fiver for a physical copy of the game.

I think I started with the free updates at £80, Still trying to make up my mind on whether the future ddf relationship with the devs is worth £100 to me...

I would say it's worth backing, if you haven't watched the latest dev diary take a look, it might dispel some of your concerns

I'll leave 2. for the devs.

3. In it's present form the PBF has a few sneak peaks, but probably not worth it at the moment, however it may well develop more as we get into Alpha. However, if you are potentially prepared to invest £75 in this game, do yourself a favour and find the extra £5 to get the Digital Download Pack at £80. This will give you all future expansions to the game and apparently at one stage Michael Brookes stated that he thought it was underpriced and should have been set at £150.

If you are going to back it take the 80 pledge as it includes any and all expansions packages for life for free. The difference in price to get private backers and the free upgrades is just 5 more, so a bargain if going 75. As for is the private area section alone worth it. Probably not anymore with the alpha being released in December and the beta in January. The general section and video's will be all over the place. The benefit at 80 is the free expansions as they are released. If the game retails for say 60 the first expansion will be no less then 20 and probably more, so you just made your money back and anything after that is pure money saved and never spent.

To me that makes the 80 pledge the best bang for the buck. My entire thought from the beginning was, at 80 I save money in the long run when expansions released. With that said I pledged for alpha access, I just couldn't wait till January to play the beta. For most though 80 is the sweet spot, the game and all expansions.

Lol... I have to say other than the peek of the week, there is very little reason to be in the Private Backer's Forum, although i do enjoy the banter there too.

The real value is getting to the tier with the free expansions, so i believe. That was the first one i jumped to becaus it made financial sense. Everything else is a nice bonus depending on how involved you want to be in the testing, or for more the lasting legacy.

Had i seen the game earlier, i would likely have gone for DDF, but so late in the process i decided against it and just enjoy the few discussions there are here rather than spout too much about game design (i feel the DDF have it covered).

I think Elite is going to impress a lot of people, despite staying relatively under the radar in comparison to SC... No single player campaign, though you can play tne universe offline or online single player, if you dont like other people on the internet! He he.

Good luck, hope to see you on board with this great project and community, but if not i hope you enjoy your time with SC or any other project you back in the future.

If that's all you're pledging up to that level for then I'd say definitely not... it's basically just the same stuff as the general forums but with fewer people. The only dev contribution just now is a "sneak peek" feature where they show a new screenshot each week. And you've no doubt seen way more if you've watched the newest video so no, PBF on it's own is not worth the pledge IMHO.

But £80 for lifetime updates? I'd say that was worth it.

Op, I also agree the £80 level is very good value, and it the one to go for. Personally I find the additional forum access interesting but not overwhelmingly useful, and not worth the extra contribution on it's own. However the £80 option means you can play the game indefinitely for no further cash payment.

Regarding your more fundamental 'should you back the game at all' question, I can do no better than to direct you to Dev Diaries 6 and 8...

I didn't go for X:Rebirth, but I was seriously tempted and I'm very glad I didn't. But the amount of scepticism their product has generated among the gaming community has left me feeling pretty angry. The damage their release has done to consumer confidence in other space genre releases is yet to be determined, but your post highlights my concern.

The development team at Frontier have been very forthright in their responses to questions regarding ED, they haven't given the sugar-coated answer and on occasions have revealed things that are a disappointment for backers (no SPL on release for example). This has left me with the impression they're producing a product with realistic expectations - they're not promising us the moon on a stick, so what they are promising us can be taken at face value, and what they're promising looks pretty amazing.

And last but not least would you, 75+ GBP backers tell me if it's really worth to back up the project to that point to be able to read all those posts in private section of the forum? Whether you value insider information on ED or not is something only you know, it depends how curious you are and how engaged in the project you want to be. But I would say that the £80 tier offers the best option for a gamer looking for bang per buck, because you get expansions for free and Frontier have already committed to at least 2 of them (Planetary landings and EVA). Having multiple starter options and extended forum access is some mighty fine icing too.

Hi Hampius - quite a few of us have admitted to being on SC too so don't worry about that.

Have a look at the Design Discussion Archive - that has a ton of detail about the development plans and will give you a lot more info than the Private Backers Forum.

Hope you like what you see and go for it.

I reckon the PBF will be worth it in time, even though it's not so much at the moment. The forums will see a lot of new members in the future, and not just lovely people like yourself. The private forum will be a nice peaceful place for us all to chat in a way that doesn't involve being lost in the noise.

As others say, if you're thinking of £75, then chuck in the extra fiver and get the free updates. Unless you're particularly fond of physical goods (I'll probably end up selling my premium boxed copy and just buy a hardback of the novel) it will probably be well worth it.

I hadnt thought that far ahead about the PBF value post launch...

I had a whole post written out, but others have said it all while I was typing :)

Without knowing what you're looking for in a space game, it's hard to say anything more specific than "it's gonna be great". As ianw mentioned, the the design discussion archive is a treasure trove of information about the game. Maybe take a quick look at the topics and ask about one that particularly interests you?

And it seems to me that a member of Frontier (Michael perhaps?) said there will be other benefits in the PBF, later

£80 tier is the 1 i recommend, it got most bang for the buck spent.:D

But you can see from my sig i spent £150+ and i found this high was wort spending on this game, Alpha and higher tho i think the price tag is starting to hurt my wallet to much compared to the gain i can get.
