It's a remnant from the original, 1.0 version. Where basic missions were 10k, and "I'm glad I've found you..." offered you 25k.

The prices for basic missions went sky high from that time, but no one informed this bunch.

It's like each programmer/designer/writer in E is entirely compartmentalised and cannot see or know about anything else in the game. :/

Or the word from above is that missions don't count. Missions don't matter. Screw missions. If you mess up the missions, FD (Braben) doesn't care. There can be no other conclusion (and I say this as an original backer.)
