Asked for quite some time go - one of Mike's replies:

I don't recall this feature ever being announced as probably being implemented. I do recall not wanting to implement such a feature at all and if forced to would hobble so many conditionals and exceptions to it's use to make it in line with how other people head track (be it with a controller or otherwise) that it might not be worth the trouble.

With the game being very VR-centric, I doubt this will ever be added.

Yeah I think VR has better potential for realistic target tracking. I've never really liked padlock views, but the occasional look around the cockpit is handy.

TBH, I think this should be considered for the console version, it's not like we have all the options that are available on PC (VR, head trackers, HOTAS with dedicated headlook control), though I think the PS4 will be better able to deal with headlook by using the gyro on the controller.

On the Xbox, we have to lose a bunch of ship control to be able to freelook around, so I am pretty sure it is rarely used (during combat). So a padlock view that only operated for the visible areas of the cockpit and within human head/neck limitations (i.e. no padlocking onto targets that have gone behind you etc).

Being as the game is PC oriented, I doubt they ever will do it just to cater for the console players, shame really.
