Newcomer / Intro Hi guys I'm new and in trouble.

I've read several tutorials and still can't get started. Running the game on PC win10. First I can't get my mouse to work on the opening screen, are ALL commands confirmed with the keyboard. It works but not in the game. I tried for a manual, to be informed there isn't one - great, a really complicated game with no manual. So far I haven't been able to find a tutorial that starts with the basics and then gets you into it a bit at a time. Could somebody help with this please and point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Hi
What do mean by opening screen? There's maybe three before you're sat in a ship. The mouse should be working on those, if not it's a bug. In-game, use Q and E keys for scrolling left and right and UP and DOWN arrows (for up and down) on in cockpit menus and SPACE as enter. Mouse should work while docked at a port on Starport screen.

Manual is in the Launcher, top right corner. It's a bit outdated 🤷‍♂️ , but it's all we get.
Menu control is keyboard only and per default (IIRC) mapped to WASD (and a few more for left/right tabbing etc.), with the space bar for "enter".

Oh, and you can get your personal keymap from edrefcard.info.

Any more troubles, let us know what kind of rig you are using.
I'm running win 10

Thanks. The mouse works okay until I get to this screen that tells me to launch whatever ship is on the screen. I'm running Win 10 Nvidia 1080 graphics card, 32 Gb DDR. Pic attached. It disappears behind the ED loaded pic. I couldn't find anything in settings to relate to my problem. Can I not use my mouse, only the keyboard. I have printed out
some of the keyboard commands from the tutorial, hoping I might find an answer there. Meant to ask , where do I find training?

Thanks, dumb question, what is WASD
Sorry - common keyboard movement keys in a lot of games. The keys "W", "A", "S" and "D". If you put your left hand on the keyboard, conveniently under your three main fingers.

Edit: if you don't have a US or German keyboard, it might be different letters. It's still (usually) the second key from the left on the top alpha row and the first three keys on the second alpha row.

Thanks, I'm a dumb Aussie

Thanks, I think. Not sure what I have taken on here, pretty full on, big learning curve

It is indeed. I'll agree it's not the easiest of games to get into but, on the flip side, it's probably the most rewarding.

One of the things to do is making sure you have all your key binds set up so they are easy to remember and actually locate. After a while, you'll find you don't look at your controls as your muscle memory kicks in and you don't even think about it.

Another thing is, don't rush. Take your time. It will all start making sense after a while.

So, yeah, welcome to the vertical learning curve!

You've probably already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
