Newcomer / Intro Hi. I have a question about the Docking Computer that I hope someone can answer.

Hi. So just to introduce myself, I played the orginal Elite back in the 80s and loved it. I gave Elite Dangerous a go about 2 years ago but tbh I got so fed up crashing while docking that I gave up on it. Oddly enough it was the same with the original Elite.

Anyhow, wanting to get back into it - I finally got enough credits to buy a docking computer and I am docked in Gidzenko Ring where I should be able to buy a Docking Computer.

I say 'should' because it's not showing up in my options to buy. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to be able to get one please?

Thanks in advance.

Oh Wow thanks. When I googled it - all the screen shots showed it on the Internal Compartment section so I never thought to look deeper.
Google is not necessarily your friend in this game, there is a lot of stuff out there that was fine when it was written but the game has changed over time so when it was written is important. Much of the information out there is going to be outdated in the next few months when the Odyssey expansion releases.

Also there are terms used in the game that have very different meanings when searched for on google than are intended in the game and are not suitable for viewing by all sorts of people and in all sorts of places.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

Yeah, docking in Elite '84 using the keybord was a challenge. I know...

You've probably already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Also, docking in ED is a lot easier than back then in original Elite. The learning curve is legendary, but it means there's so much room for improvement concerning flying, I'd try docking without docking computer. Learning to fly the ship is a lot of fun and you'll be rewarded for that on every turn. :)

Buy a stock sidey.. Take out thedocking computer.. Sell the stock sidey

But getting an Advanced Docking computer for 3200 that way is a bit of a faff when a standard DC only costs 4500 - it isn't like credits are hard to find these days. ;)

I remember when I learned to dock in '84. It was an accomplishment. I also played Frontier: Elite II for a little before life took me away from the game until a couple of years ago. I agonized over whether I would be able to maneuver and dock, remembering something about the challenging nature of it.
The first time I tried it, I was amazed at how simple it was! I couldn't figure out why. It took a while until I remembered that - back in the day - Elite had no YAW. That is indeed the difference - and WHAT a difference.

Two brief comments:
1) I have to agree with others who suggest that learning to maneuver will pay dividends every time you play. Docking is best learned immediately, when you have no credits to speak of, no fancy gear on your ship and can thus tolerate getting a stock replacement. I have to say that I never think about occupying a slot for a docking computer. No, I don't judge anyone based on whether they do or not. There's no point in that kind of silliness.

2) I challenge folks to try docking without using Yaw. No cheating- pitch and roll only. You may be surprised at what a different task it becomes.

Suggestions and such aside, welcome back to the game! I still remember first seeing Elite:Dangerous after all those years and being blown away. Have fun out there!
