Newcomer / Intro Hi Ya - Starting out on Elite again.

Just returning to Elite after 30 years. Used to play on the old C64. Now going to try to get to Elite again on Elite Dangerous. A bit frivolous for 57 year old, some would suppose, but why not. Still waiting for the game to arrive but bought a tower for it in the meantime.

XPS 8700
Windows® 8.1 (64 Bit) English
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4790 processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz)
12 GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory (2x4GB + 2x2GB) 1600MHz
4 GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745
1 TB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)

Brand new and cheap I thought at £551, so just wondering what the catch is. Should be enough too run the game comfortably though, I hope.

Incidentally, I would like to ask how many of you here, played the original and what rank did you reach?

I don't think you'll have a problem running the game. My PC is a 6 year old Core 2 Duo with what was a mid-range graphics card upgrade 3 years ago. I can run the game at 1080p with most settings in the middle ground but AA turned off. Core i7 at that price is pretty good indeed. The graphics card is low end which is where Dell is saving the money, but still more powerful than mine.

It'll do fine.

I started out playing on the BBC Micro when I was about 9 or 10. It was only a borrowed machine, so nothing was ever saved and we always had to start from scratch. The first game I got for my Spectrum 128K+2 when I was about 12 was Elite (and a Kempston joystick to go with it). Good times!

Be ready to triple to cost when you realise an ace monitor sound system HOTAS stick pedals and regular meals out for your nearest and dearest will be required to keep them happy

Drop me a PM if you want any help at all and Ill be glad to advise its a steep learning curve and there is little sympathy

Oh and being an '84 just wait until you go into the station fro the first time - it will take a week to get the smile off your face.

Bythen you might have a docking computer and the blue danube will put it on for a month

Yep, me too, was a late starter to the Elite 84 game.

Played it in the early 90s, took about 2 years of reloading the ZX81 and rewinding the tape deck to the right save point.

Now in my 50s and having been waiting for many many years for this to come out. Great game, love, in spite of all the 'little' issues. Using a Tosh C660 laptop and still crashing, but fun and will up date laptop, as soon as I can work out, which one is within my budget.

Arry

Also...how did you wangle that price!?! I'm in the market for a new PC (like I say...6 years old), and I can't see that machine on Dell's website for less than £729. Did you get a deal that's no longer there?

I never knew about Elite before the 10th of Jan this year. I bought it the same day, and I've been hooked ever since.

By the way, the game is pretty well optimized so I'm sure you'll be able to run it just fine. (I'm playing it smoothly on a gaming laptop)

Aye, and now hopefully they're back again :)

Thanks, I will. Ah... The Blue Danube... I love that :)

The ZX81... That got me started off in 30 year IT career, lol

They had 3 in Dell Clearance a couple of days ago, and I leapt on one like a randy darlek on a dustbin, lol. They were all gone by the end of the day.

Thanks, as basic as the original seems now, it was still quite immersive.

BBC at school, Deadly
Speccy at home, Deadly
BBC group play at Uni, Elite

I will be Elite in this version, even if it is "only" Exploration

I just looking forward to have the hell shot out of me, lol. Did you play any of the intermediate versions? I found the Newtonian physics for one of them made it , for me, unplayable.

I also started Elite on the C64 (pre ordered and couldn't wait to get my hands on it) got to Deadly
Moved to Atari STFM, STE, MegaSTE got to Dangerous
Played Oolite but got bored, didn't quite seem the same.
Been playing ED since Premium Beta (must be a year now) and still loving every minute of it.
I don't visit the forum much these days, I just can't stand all the cry babies.
See ya in the black Commander !

No expert, but to me the GPU seems a little low end, falling between a GT 640 and a GTX 750 it will do, but not much more. The 3-year-old card (GTX 670) in my mid-range desktop is twice as powerful, and still has frames-per-second dips in stations and asteroid fields.

It's a good price, but if the OP bought the machine for Elite it would maybe be better to get to spend a little more on an i5 with a better GPU. Someone more tech-savvy could advise.

I played Elite a lot when I was a kid, but never got above Average as I didn't know how to save the game! I played the later ones much more in my teens.

I did try one that was utterly impossible, dont know which one it was.

The young idiots around here WANT the Thargoids to turn up. I just laugh at them from behind the sofa.

Thanks. I did think the the graphics card would be the weakest link but I think it will do for now. I can always upgrade it later.

I always remember in the original version, that little trick you could use to fall out into Thargoid space, fight them and farm all the alien items, and zipping out again to flog them, lol
