Newcomer / Intro Hi Ya - Starting out on Elite again.

Welcome home Commander.

That PC should run the game fine and perhaps you may think on getting a HOTAS, TrakIR or Oculus to go with that, which will all enhance the experience.

ZX Spectrum 48k was my first Experience and got to Elite on that. Played on the Amiga PC as well but can't mind where I got to on those.
Still searching for Generation Ships :)

A few toxic whelps lurking around the forums and in-game but apart from that you will no doubt enjoy being back.

Only thing I'd consider low spec wise would be the gpu, I am myself running everything in ultra with an i5 and a gtx960 and I can definitely recomend it barring one caveat, its lacking a bit in terms of dedicated ram so anything over 1080p would require decreasing qiality, I wouldn't for example bother trying and oculus with this.
But then again folks say even SLI980's aren't enough for that and each of those cards cost 3x as much as the 960 do.

In fact the Hotas I just ordered costs more than my GPU :p

I do sometimes also run Ed in trippel screen surround and that's fine if I go down to high quality settings, but might stutter a little in stations.

Thanks. I did think the the graphics card would be the weakest link but I think it will do for now. I can always upgrade it later.

When I saw your machine specs my first thought was that the GPU was the weak link. I started using a 5/6 year-old 8800GTS (which was fairly high-end back then) and it did OK on low-mid graphics. The graphics card is a relatively easy upgrade if you need to do it.

Welcome to the galaxy. Ignore all the naysayers in the "general discussion" forum, the kids like to complain about everything but it's a fantastic game.

I ran a friend's DK2 on my GTX960 for a weekend, it worked fine. Although with the limited time I had turned the graphics down from ultra to high.

I'm a brand new player too (hi all), and am playing on a system that is nearly 10 years old (except for the graphics card).

Core 2 Duo E6850
Nvidia 650i motherboard
GTX 470 graphics card (bought off ebay second hand for £27 after my GTX460 (which was a replacement for a 8800GT) died)
8gb standard RAM (I used to have 4gb quicker RAM, but switched it out for more)
Vista 64

As you can see, I'm well below minimum requirements in some areas, but it runs absolutely fine. The game's recommended settings were for 1600*900 at high quality... I changed that immediately to 1900*1200 (my monitor's native) and medium settings.

Graphics cards make a huge difference, in all games that need them. Don't skimp. If you're money constrained, doing what I did and buying an older card second hand is always a good option. Do do research on benchmarks though.

I'm 37, and probably was a little young (7 or 8) when I first played the original Elite on both my friend's BBC and my C64. Never really got the hang of it, but I do remember docking a few times successfully.
