Just thought I would say hello. Takes me right back to first laying elite on the bbc, and then later on playing it again all over Christmas on my atari ST...... I am hoping to do it all over again now

having a few problems getting to grips with everything and I wish I could get my joystick and key maping sorted out out...... Might need some help with that !

you can switch from generic joystick to custom joystick. Then you have to map mostly everything yourself.
fool around with the controls in the first tutorial mission.

Welcome CMDR, there are a lot of 84ers playing this game, myself included.
I just posted about keymapping in another thread, I made a list if all the keybinds and kept it in front of me whilst first playing, then after a bit I remapped the useful ones.

Welcome! I have a new player's guide here which may help with your control woes, amongst other things. Best of luck getting to grips with the game, it's fantastic once you get settled in, stick with it!
