High-res camera/Open: is there a solution?

Morning/afternoon/evening/happy Hanukkah, all.

So it is/should be common knowledge that high res screenshots cannot be taken in Open. My very limited technical understanding of this limitation boils down to conflicting interests in Open needing to maintain a consistent connection, and high res screenshots needing to interrupt connectivity as it renders the image in higher quality.

So the question itself: would there be scope for high res screenshots to be possible in Open, provided there is no-one else in your system/instance?

To answer questions around why this is relevant, it is because any explorer that enjoys the art of F10 is effectively forced to make a decision between nice screenshots and the chance of running into anyone else. That's probably fine for most of them but myself among others live for random encounters. It would be nice to think that explorers can still head towards Beagle Point/whatever popular destination, still be able to put their arty side to good use, and still have the possibility of running into another CMDR deep in the void for the best possible "well what are the chances" moments.

I'm just coming back past Sag A*/Colonia from my rare exploration runs and it feels utterly inelegant to play in Open for the chances of encountering someone, but swap to PG every time I want dat screeny.

Cheers.

Could you maybe put a trigger saying that if your bandwidth is above a certain number (usual indicator of network activity) then you aren't able to take the hi res screenie.

Most of the time when I'm in solo/PG it's for screenie purposes and when out in Open I'm often alone so the bandwidth is <100 so to speak....

I don't think it's possible.

Way back when, hi res screenshots were being weaponised by saving them to USB 1.1 sticks - the slower the better. More recent variations on the exploit took it to extremes - network shares over serial port at 75bps anyone?

But if you have a trigger test before the rendering is started won't that stop any exploit from happening?

The test will simply see what bandwidth the game client has available.

It cannot see how the folder it is saving the screenshots to is actually pointed to by the OS if the user wants to relocate those folders to absolutely anything they like.

Even if Elite tried to use some form of bandwidth monitoring of the storage before allowing the screenshot to happen, there are at least four or five ways to mess that up too - not to mention that would introduce a potentially huge lag for the screenshot itself, so you'd end up with a screenshot of something you didn't get a screenshot of - if you get one at all, and the actual exploit itself isn't affected but indeed enhanced.

Ah well. Guess I'll stick to PG then for my screenies

It's unfortunate, but between lulzbunnies and the way FD implemented hi-res screenshots, it's what we have to live with I'm afraid.

Sometimes I'm tempted to plug in 3x4K displays and see just what happens when I try to put a hi-res screenshot on a parallel Zip disk :D

Hm. Not entirely convinced there is no method until I hear it from the horse's mouth, but I suspect this would be massively low on the prioritisation list.
