highest resolution VR screen yet

They have made the screen and are using Fovated Rendering, it is likely much sooner than you think. The real questions will be how much and what will I need to run this with.

And these issues as listed here are far from easy fixes:

At this stage, consumers will need to wait for Google and LG Display to eliminate issues such as lag, latency, and motion-blur before making their prototype available to everyone.
In fact those are the same issues we have with current OLED, and we honestly don't have a clue how to solve or we would have.
I would be very surprised if we where at full production in less than three years.

I'm also fairly certain they mean "We intend to use foveated rendering" which is also proving far more problematic than first thought, yea if we compromise heavily we can bang something together but it isn't going to be what people are hoping for.

Now that said, I don't think even with foveated rendering we will do anything like 1x1 pixel rendering.
Pimax seems to have the idea, we don't really need to render at a high detail, we just need enough and upscaling hardware and tech can do the rest.
