Highschool bullies

Hittman - as others have said, your son can play in "solo" where the universe is impact by other players, but where he won't see anyone else. Alternatively, he can join the gigantic Mobius PvE community which play as a group and only condone PvE content. The solutions are there - right in front of you. An alternative - if he enjoys the thrill of open - is play/practice in a smaller, cheap ship where there's little downside to being destroyed. Chances of getting harassed are close-to-zero if he doesn't stick around popular trade hubs/routes, of which there are billions! I've been playing for over a year, play mainly in open, and have only been "griefed" twice - and that was about 9 months ago, if memory serves.

Many games have PVE/PVP area which are separate why can't this game do likewise?

If I feel like some PVP I should be able to go to a server/area to do this, likewise for PVE.

Consensual PVP for many gamers is a de-facto standard in MMO's.

It's all no brainer stuff and not implemented very well in this game...

We DO NOT need to divide our galaxy in a ''safe zone" and ''war zone'' way thats not immersive , and I am 99.999999999999% that it was not a targeted attack but just bad luck that made him a target , elite is a life sim if you are not to be the elite in the galaxy you fall.
I would say play solo or private.
I would never do such an action on a player and would escort any and all players (as long as they love the alliance) I never seen any hostile action against me beyond being pirated once and the pirate was a nice guy anyway

How will pirates make there money? plus it would brake immersion

PM me and I can hunt those bullies down. See my itano circus ram them out of this game.

On another note, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being alone. If your son doesn't want to fit in, he can be perfectly fine himself. No he won't grow up with psychological problems. When I was in high school, I knew no friends. It was not uncommon that my mouth does not open once for the whole day except maybe for the occasional lunch. Although I was always and still am socially awkward, I do not find it bad in any way.

Then again, the schools I went to had virtually zero bullies. Can't even find one if you looked for them.

I can't say anything really beyond what others have said...although I may have been a little less snarky than a few. When playing open and you see another player unfortunately the rule of thumb is DTA (Don't Trust Anybody). Sad, but true, so in a way I'm sorry that you both seemed quite unprepared for what open is but unfortunately it is what it is and the best thing is to not quit but move on and learn.....either play another mode or know what open is like and be prepared and DTA (i.e. never let anyone get behind you and if you see others then immediately either play leapfrog on the way to the station or drop supercruise and frameshift drive to a different system.

It's not really bullying, it's more sabotage.

Fine by me - more people to kill in the starter system who will leave after 20 minutes or switch to solo. If enough do this, the game will die.

Then, to reinvigorate it - FD might actually implement something good for players who want a MULTIPLAYER game.

There's an organized effort to kill off all the new players before they learn the game. Their goal is to get them to quit or leave bad reviews as revenge for some slight Fdev did to them.

Hi Hittman.

It's a shame you won't be reading this response, but I'll write it in the hope that others may benefit.

"I openly question the developers and management of Frontier if they plan on doing something to prevent the few from ruining the game for the majority."

Frontier did indeed do something to prevent this, right from day one... in the original design.

Simply select SOLO mode instead of OPEN PLAY, and no other player will be visible in your (or your son's) gameplay galaxy. Everything else is 100% identical to OPEN PLAY. You can fully participate in Community Goals, PowerPlay, every available mission, etc.

Alternatively, select PRIVATE GROUP and set up your own one- or two-player group, where you only see each other.

A third option is to join something like the Mobius Private Group, which is a dedicated "non-PvP" gaming community. Again, you can fully participate in Community Goals, PowerPlay, etc. As of this weekend, that group has 10,000 like-minded pilots - engaged in cooperative gameplay.

The best and most maturist response, one like this would keep me in the game, not that my 16 month old daughter would be playing :p

Well, maybe we should direct them to the safer zones of the game so they can get into it. Solo / group because no new player, no matter how charming is gonna survive if there are efforts to not let them play.

I pity those who have never been forced to overcome bullying. I received invaluable lessons in psychology, diplomacy, politics, improvisation, deductive reasoning, and self-defense from school yard bullies...all in the relatively safe setting of a degenerate public school where fatal injuries, while not unheard of, were quite a bit more rare than they are in violent confrontations in post-adolescent life.

Anyway, I don't accept the premise that the few have ruined, or are ruining, the game for the majority.

Many games have PVE/PVP area which are separate why can't this game do likewise?

Because segmenting the player base further isn't good for anyone, or Frontier's vision of the game.

You can't have a convincing setting if you are going to actively exclude potentially hostile players who aren't otherwise breaking any rules.

Consensual PVP for many gamers is a de-facto standard in MMO's.

The only MMOs I've ever really enjoyed had virtually unrestricted PvP.

Jumpgate and Shadowbane were great precisely because my characters/ships were never safe. There was potential for danger anywhere. I was usually the underdog, and that made it all the more enjoyable.

I'm sorry but this is just absurd. I'm sorry your son has had a hard time at school, but this is an mmo video game. I can't help but feel that getting emotional and protective over your son in the context of a video game...protecting him from "bullies" who blow his ship up...is completely ridiculous

This game is a wee bit different, that being not so user friendly for new players. People are different so you can't set your persona above anyone else's. No one cares how you present yourself basically, because you're on a Forum. I could tell you stories about bullying but I wouldn't want to bore you to death.
You did miss the point though.
Most new players need to play solo or group because they will just get slaughtered otherwise. How do you rank up weapons? Time played, right? So what chance does a new player in Open really stand?
Yeah, thought that...
They won't even have half a clue about power management either because they are just getting things they never had before and working that out so I seriously recommend all new players either go solo, if they like to play a game, or go group where they may get some help as to how things work.
Once they learn then job done.
But allowing them to be fed to the scummier elements of the game is not gonna help anyone...or the game's population.

Just had an interesting experience with my 14 year old son... he has had his challenges fitting in at a new school and starting this summer he started playing ED. Seems there is a bully just praying on smaller ships... like any bully he is larger and travels with a crew of equally bully minded fools and prey on the week. Now he is just as upset as he has been in school this last year. As a father I hate to see such non-sense and I openly question the developers and management of Frontier if they plan on doing something to prevent the few from ruining the game for the majority. While I understand that there are a few that want more PvP action you may want to do your homework and look at the other MMP games out there and do the math. Most have PvE and PvP servers... Now I ask you, "What servers have the highest player base?" More than 75% in most games are PvE and have special zones or places for PvP action thus preventing much of the Greifing and subsequently the number of complaints and ultimately the lower number of dropping players. NO ONE likes a bully, and no one enjoys dozens or hundreds of hours lost due to a few maxed out ships teaming up and tormenting the weak with absolutely no recourse. SHAME on them and SHAME on Frontier for creating a place for such abuse.

To you bullies that want to respond to this thread with your tired rhetoric... I will not be reading them, save your breath, but I am sure there are more in the community that have had similar incidents and many more that have given up on this beautiful game. What a shame... It had so much promise.

I do encourage everyone else that shares this sentiment to let Frontier know... It is too late for my son he has deleted the game from his computer :S... likely too late for me as well .

It was fun these last 5 months... but everything must come to an end. Off to check out the competition.

Mate why not check out Mobius. It's would be just fine for what you are looking for and you don't even have to start from scratch!

Got to be a troll post surely? or are you one of those types that thinks everyone should get a gold medal for taking part.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
It sounds like OP has already made up his mind and is not interested in reading responses in this thread. It's unfortunate that his experience (and his son's) in the game has not been ideal.

That said, people have already pointed out the obvious solutions here - solo mode or private group. That is pretty much what OP was getting at with segregated PvE and PvP.

I'm not sure there's much left to say. Since this thread is already becoming somewhat circular (Rule 18) and generating some ridicule (Rule 1) I'm going to close this.
